SINGIN' IN THE RAIN - Face it. This movie isn't just an amazing musical. It's an amazing comedy. Hence making it an amazing musical comedy. Watching it is like going on the most amazing LSD trip while eating a really good McRibwich. If you come across a person who hates this movie, they're probably a Nazi.
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH - One of the least "stagiest" musicals ever made. Seriously.

I don't think people who dislike musicals would enjoy either of those. In fact I think Hedwig would turn them off from musicals completely.
I know several people who don't typically like musicals but love CHICAGO.
You beat me, Neddy! I was going to say Chicago too. And apparently Moulin Rouge.
I agree with CHICAGO, my theater oblivious friend and I were talking and I mentioned the stage Chicago and he said something along the lines of "CHICAGO was a play....weird"

THE BLUES BROTHERS.
A friend of mine could not hate musicals more but she loved RENT.
It may depend on age; but I don't like musicals, and I hated MOULIN ROUGE (I would list it as the worst film ever made) and HEDWIG. I also didn't care all that much for CHICAGO, either as a play or a film.

I've yet to meet a person who dislikes Grease.

well you just met one.
Tiff-Moulin Rouge nearly turned me off to any movie, let alone musicals. I left before that could happen!
Anyway, although I think Hedwig is a brilliant film, I think it's too esoteric for the purpose of the title of this thread!

It really depends on who you're recommending it to. What kind of normal music and movies they like. Hedwig (and, to a lesser extent, Rent) would be perfect to recommend to the kinds of people I'm friends with. So, for certain people, Hedwig totally fits the purpose.
If you know the person you can usually tell whether you should recommend Hedwig or Chicago, Grease or West Side Story, Singin in the Rain or Cabaret.
The really popular stuff is usually the best, really. They've sunk into popular culture enough to not totally alienate the audience. The problem is finding the next perfect movie for someone who already loved Chicago or Rent or Grease.
... *loves Baz Luhrmann and Moulin Rouge*...
I would go with Mary Poppins. Everyone likes something about Mary Poppins, even if they don't love the whole movie.
If the Disney animated movies qualify as "movie musicals", those would be an obvious choice as well.
EDIT: YENTL. Come on, you know you're all thinking it too...
