Moving to Bushwick w/10k and a job unreasonable?

Im really looking to make my move to the city soon, and with 10K in savings I think I may be able to do it. Id be living in bushwick with a max of $1200 on a room per month. I just wanna know from any locals how unrealistic this plan would be. I do not have a job, but would plan to get a serving job that is at least $45k a year if its some sort of chain, but aiming to make much more. Again, without much knowledge its hard to know where to look for answers to questions like these so I figured this may be a good first step. Thanks in advance!

Do you HAVE to live in Bushwick? I’m a server and I live in Washington Heights and about $800 in rent. I work in Midtown as a server and I can get to work in 20 minutes usually. I don’t like Bushwick. I suppose it’s trendy. But there are other places. But to answer your question yes. But just be warned NYC will eat your money fast. So land a job quick!

Unless you’re dying to live in Brooklyn (can’t imagine why), I wouldn’t make the move to Bushwick. If you’re willing to live with roommates (which you should be if you’re looking to stretch your savings as far as possible instead of burning through it), move to Washington or Hamilton Heights on the Upper West Side and don’t spend more than $900-1000/month on rent.

Be smart and don’t just jump at the first apartment you see. Do your research. NYC is expensive, but the savvier you are, the easier it’ll be. Lots of people I know are complaining about the prices but spend over $1000/month on rent in Brooklyn or Queens while I’m spending under $700 in Manhattan and my apartment is decently sized (with a few roommates and my husband, admittedly), within close walking distance of 5 subway lines, and in the heart of some really good coffee shops and restaurants.
