And I don't know how else to say it ... progress does have to do with morals. Supporting progress, especially in ones community, is all about ones moras and ethics.

I just fail to see why it is ALWAYS immoral to shop at a Borders every once in a while.

If one shops mostly at indies, that's best ... me, I "never" buy stuff at Borders, B&N, etc ... but one of my points here is that more people need to shop at indies a lot more. Going to a big conglomerate every now and then for media isn't the end of the world; just spend more time at indies.

In fact, if you can afford it, buy your groceries at Whole Foods and farms/farmers markets:)

Well, my decision to shop for media at indies and support organic foods is based upon my own principles and morals, ya know?

I discuss these issues with people in real life, and my voice will get louder and my blood pressure race ... I am just so passionate about it all.

And ok ... we can ultimately agree to disagree.

I, for one, buy where I get the best price and service. If that's Amazon, or B&N, so be it. But I'll look into booksense.com, hadn't heard of that before

I shop at Border's (mostly) because I have been shopping there for about 15 years---many of the employees know what I like, and steer me in the direction of other books I might like. When I go to NYC, I make it a point to go to the Mysterious Book Store, and the Strand. I like indies, and would shop there more often, but since public transportation in Pgh is not the best, I am somewhat limited! I do shop at a local used store near work though, and use Alibris---I will check out booksense.com.

Awesome that you support indie bookstores whenever you can :)

And http://www.booksense.com is amazing ... enter your zip code and it lists many of your nearby independent bookstores (most indie booksellers are associated with booksense; not all, but most). Choose a store, order online from them, and you are still supporting that store!

Nearly 100 indie bookstores opened up in 2006, which is so awesome; more people need to support them ... to support real progress!

I discovered The Mysterious Bookstore about a year ago---I usually get 2 or 3 books when I get to NYC (I like old books!). I love indie stores, because of their individuality, and when I started going to Border's it wasn't the chain it is today (but I am loyal...).
There is a mystery bookstore in the area, but I have no way of getting there

I adore second hand bookstores, however.

http://www.booksense.com also does special orders ... more pricey than amazon.com, but they do work to support community bookstores.

Personally, because of my morals and principles, under "no" circumstances will I ever buy anything again -- not even food -- from Borders or Barnes & Noble (not even if I know some of the employees well) ... but if you do balance out your time between Borders and indies, that is at least better than ignoring independents alltogether :).

And shop for more of your books via a store on booksense!

Yes, Booksense is great for finding your local independent's website. My store has a Booksense site (link is in my profile). You can order anything you want online and have it shipped or pick it up in the store.

For those of you wondering, Booksense is a program of the American Bookseller's Association which helps to bring independents together.

Though, even the chains are losing ground to the internet.

Here in Pittsburgh, there were only two bookstores. A Barnes Noble and an independent mini-chain that has about four stores.

Well, the Barnes Noble closed at the beginning of the year because it couldn't compete with internet book sales.

So, Downtown Pittsburgh has only one not-all-that-good bookstore and it's in a department store on the ninth floor. So, anyone walking around downtown looking for a bookstore will think that we're a bunch of illiterate boobs!

True ... yet, the more people spend money at indies, the more likely they will stay open, and I would rather have these stores than Borders, etc, you know? They give real character to a community, often have a lot of atmosphere (atmosphere can be a lot more than what one sees), and many indie stores will give back to their communities.

Lately, I "have" noticed a surge in indie bookstores; not only in growth, but also public interest and -- finally -- understanding.

Hopefully, someday, you will get a new independent bookstore (call me crazy, but I would rather have no bookstore than a Barnes & Noble). In the meantime, order your books at http://www.booksense.com :)
