Here's a good one.....a librarian at a Manhattan Beach, CA elementary school is getting grief from parents who feel the Marian the Librarian sequence from the original Music Man movie is too racy for their 5th graders.

The movie is used with the children in classes on musical instruments.
Two parents have complained, which made two teachers stop the movie.

Apparently the parents have never watched the movie...
(Hello???? one of the great classics of Broadway)

Can a musical get anymore family-oriented than Opie singing about the Wells Fargo wagon.

You would think these idiot parents would be thrilled to have their kids see a musical about a man professing his love for a woman, rather than calling it racy....I mean how sexy can anything be in those costumes....

No wonder we have SO many screwed-up kids......with idiot parents to guide them

oh. God. This is too funny.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Wow--I was already sneaking peeks at porn when I was in the 5th grade, as were all my classmates--why do parents so quickly forget what it's like to be children?

Manhattan Beach, CA? You mean this didn't happen in the South? I'm shocked!!

Puh-leeze! Seriously, that's sad. Parents today go too far. And kids are more screwed up than ever.

Off the topic of the thread - Elphaba, your cat is precious beyond precious. He reminds me of my little zaftig (one of my babies has the same markings, but a, how shall we say, "plumper" stature).

exactly lil.....I'd post the post from the listserv that the librarian posted on, but I do not have her permission yet. I mean with all the crap on TV, internet, and the newspapers....the last thing to worry about is Music Man

Does the same school have a cheerleading squad and if so, what are their routines like?

Just curious...

Sounds like LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE hypocrisy if you ask me.

Could someone help me out with this one? I don't understand what's in THE MUSIC MAN sequence that could possibly be considered racy...even to the most f**ked up, conservative imagination.

It's not like that degenerate POLLYANNA where they show the bare bum-bum.

Lil, elementary schools in California have no sports teams, hence no cheerleaders......maybe you were thinking middle or high schools?

Borstal, the parents thought during the Marian segment when he is "chasing" her around the library, that it was suggestive. That just seems ridiculous to me.

You guys have to realize that California is FAR more provincial and conservative than you imagine.

It's only L.A. and San Fran (and about half of San Diego) that qualify as "liberal."

The rest of the entire state's demographic is staunch conservatives.

STAUNCH!!!!

Really? Chasing is now too suggestive?

No wonder Jerry ran so fast if that's what Tom had on his mind. Talk about painful!

best, sorry I disagree.....almost anything on the coast I find to be liberal, cept for Orange County and parts of San Diego county.
Palm Springs is very liberal, hence the large gay community here, and a city council that is overwhelmingly liberal.

While parts of CA may be conservative, the vast majority of the populated areas are liberal.

I've lived here most of my life......and I disagree

These are the same type of morons who made them change the Pirates Of The Carrabean (sp?) ride at Disneyland, where the pirates are chasing the wenches. They ended up putting plates of food in the wenches arms so it looks like they are going after the 'food'

Elphaba --- I'm going the census, and by polls that were taken by the national media which came out at the time of the last presidential election.

I was shocked, but apparently California is a sea of "red" concervatives with the only "blue" liberal areas in the state of California being LA, San Fran and half of SD. That's it. Nothing else. Of course those are three of the biggest cities in the entire country.

You can argue all you want from your own POV and personal experience with the people you associate with, but those were the published stats released at the time (just a couple of years ago).

I'll try to dig up old articles on line if I can. But it was basically saying that California ain't so liberal after all. Only within the confines of its major cities and their immediate suburbs.
