What is the most prestigeous (sp?) or the best college or university that offers musical theatre as a major? I know this is very broad, but just post your own opinion.

Check out Ithaca and Syracuse too. Great programs. I think Ithaca trumps over Oklahoma and UArts.
When you talk about Oklahoma, I assume you mean Oklahoma City University. University of Oklahoma has a small and very average program not even of notable national status. OCU of course has produced Tony and Grammy winners.
And OCU would handy beat Ithaca hands down.
There's also FSU, Webster, Emerson, Point Park, Elon, Uni. of Miami, Baldwin-Wallace, Roosevelt (CCPA), Penn State, and Shenandoah.
And some that are not so noted as "The Best" but still are good programs are: BYU, Sam Houston, Otterbein, Uni. of Hartford, UCLA, Wagner, Uni. of Arizona, Pace, Uni. of Central Florida, New World School of the Arts, Uni. of Alabama, Uni. of Tampa, Ball State, and Northwestern.
Also Marymount Manhattan and Cal State - Fullton have a Musical Theatre Minor which are also really good as well.
Hope this helps.

And, remember, each school appeals to different people for different reasons. Some concentrate more on dance, some on voice and some lean toward acting. Start looking early and decide which ones might be a good fit (for instance,if you hate cold and snow, avoid Ithaca like the plague!), want a small school- look at Point Park or Elon? Large university- Michigan, small conservatory, Baldwin-Wallace?Do you want a BA or a BFA? See what I mean?
The site I gave you is wonderful. At the top of the page, there are links to many schools and I urge you to join and begin posting; you'll get answers to any questions you have from parents, current students and alums. Check it out, but in the end, you have to choose the place in which you are more comfortable.

I was once told by someone who casts for broadway shows mention that they will give an automatic callback to someone who graduated from Michigan and Miami... i thought that was interesting.

Just my opinion, but my top five are UMich, Northwestern (a recent addition), CCM, NYU and CMU.
Northwestern doesn even offer a degree in MT so not sure how they can be top.
The tops are CCM (if you want to be a great chorus person), U of Michigan, Oklahoma City University, and NYU (Steinhart, not CAP21).
Boston Conservatory is good but arent as together as the others. UCLA is the only one of the west coast (yes..more than UCSD or Irvine).
That's just your opinion. It really depends on what you need to strengthen and what you are looking for.
Funny raphel...Just cause someone doesnt agree with about Ithaca or Syrcause is not reason for a snotty reply.
it is someone opinion. No need for your little comment.
And..as for MY opinion...Ithaca doesnt even make the top 20. CCM, Michigan and OCU kick their azz any day.

What about Grad Schools? any good programs for MT for grad? Preferably close to NY?
Thanks
WHOA! Hold your horses Chitty! You COMPLETELY misread my post. I did not intend for a "snotty" reply and do not care about Ithaca and Syracuse as I attend neither. I merely said that they both have good programs worth checking out.
But I guess I should have expanded my comment. What I meant was it really depends on what you want to get out of your four years? For example, Boco and CCM place a heavy emphasis on becoming a triple threat while UoMiami places a heavy focus on acting.
Montclair State! Only MT program in NJ with a great location- 20 minutes from NYC! Its entering national auditions next year.
OCU is pure love. I can't wait to start music composition there.
TheaterDude15. CCM would be most beneficial to you becoming a "triple threat". CMU leans more to the acting aspect of training (it is knows as an acting MT school) and as far as the dance goes since CMU doesn't have a dance program everyone is put on the same level no matter what. And if you are an advance dancer that can be EXTREMELY frustrating. And CCM has a well balance of Music, Theater, and Dance.
Man explaining that to you makes me think I should have auditioned for CCM (lol).
If you are looking for well balanced (Music, Theater, and Dance) training I would suggest you audition for CCM, FSU, Elon, BOCO, Point Park, Uniand Uni. of Michigan.
And make sure to sign up EARLY for auditions. I wanted to audition for FSU soooo bad so I called 2 1/2 months in advance and was put on a waiting list to even audition and never got off (lol). Oh well still going to a great school :~)
All the Best!
I know CMU's MT program is great, but how's their theatre production program? Anyone know?
Go BoCo! hahah It really depends on whats right for you. CCM may be "the best" or whatever, but I know that I would have been unhappy there. So after talking to a lot of students and to the head of the theatre dept. I knew BoCo was right for me.
Research is all it takes man.
go UARTS!!!
one of the most wonderful things about uarts, is that you really get training in all 3 aspects of musical theater. The musical theater majors take the same acting training with the acting majors and the school does many straight plays in addition to musicals. However, this is not at the expense of the singing and dance programs. It has the most wonderful faculty who are constructive and honest, but still nurturing and just amazing. feel free to PM me with any questions about it....sometimes uarts is a little bit of an unknown MT program, but it shouldn't be because it is amazing. and philadelphia is the best city to study theater in (this is coming from a native new yorker who has lived in new york her whole life). the reason i say it is better than new york to study theater is because we are literally right across the street from all the theaters in phily and they all have INCREDIBLE student discounts (i'm talking 5 and 10 dollars). i saw more shows this past year than i could have imagined and for no money. yes, new york has rushes and lotteries, but it's gonna cost you a lot more and there is no guarantee...haha. but yeah, go uarts and feel free to PM me
