Gavrochegirl - you're 12 and you love Piazza? This is an honest question. I teach 7th and 8th grade. How do you manage with all your friends liking - well, crap? I mean, the music most of my students listen to is about as far from Piazza as someone living in Australia is from NY.

The implication from stating that rap is useless is that the music from Piazza is somehow useful. Not having seen it, could someone explain what makes the music from this musical useful and how it is helping make the world a better place?

For me a twelve year old is a twelve year old.

Agree, chita. But there are 12 year olds that are more mature and 12 year olds that are still kids ! Gavrochegirl is obviously a very well educated and informed young lady !

Chita - you couldn't be more wrong. I WORK with 12 year olds -- and I've seen the range from young gangbangers to future novelists and orchestral players. By the time kids have reached that age, they are very much individuals, though with some of them you need to look beyond the incredibly powerful need to fit in with peers that defines that group. But to say that all 12 year olds are the same is sadly missing out on how great they can really be at that age.

yeah. Just ask Michael Jackson. I guess I don't know what I'm missing? ....I think I'll stay in the dark.

Got it -- ignorant and crass. If that's your attitude, I sincerely hope you stay away from children. It's hard enough being a kid at that age, but add to that adults lumping them together into one hormonal, insane, stupid group, and it's no wonder the next generation feels a need to rebel. I am truly sorry you feel that way because it shows a real lack of faith in the potential of kids. And yes, non-teachers or whoever dealing with children can be viewed as suspicious, but to have that VIEW of them is sad.

Wow. Jason you somewhat explained how I felt at 12 year olds. You have some great points, and they are very valid.
I guess some of the older memebers forgot how it felt to be 12. Since I'm a teen now - I can remember how it felt to be 12. And you are completely right with what you've stated.

Jasonf are you this charming and funny on a first date? This might explain certain things...lighten up buddy.
We don't all love kids.
And I do stay away from children except in that odd instance I run into them and then I just politely say excuse me, burn them with my cigarette and move on. Get away kid, you bother me.

ljay - thank you.
Chita -- I never said you had to like kids (though you're certainly entitled to that point of view, I will never understand it), but I do have a problem with lumping them all together into one group as you did, as if their age is a defining value. Isn't that the same thing as saying all black people are the same, all gay people are the same, or all women are the same?
Frankly, I'm sensing a lot of hostitility and bitterness from you. I'm no psychologist, but something must have brought this on...

Well I don't know about that...I don't really know you. But you brought up a good point. You said my disliking kids could be the same as someone disliking blacks or gays or jews or hispanics(I added a few.)Maybe they should be given more rights?
There is a group of smart , mature, well spoken, well read children(probably like gavrochegirl) who are pushing for laws to make them citizens with more individual rights.Interesting idea.
Having said all that...get these twelve year olds away from me!

I can understand that Piazza's music is "useful" to its story, duh, that's why its a musical. But I wouldn't say all rap music is "useless." for the most part, it does its job as being good dance/party music.

jasonf, I used to teach sixth graders (twelve-year-olds), so thank you for what you've said. I usually (quite freely) express that I'm not one to be extremely fond of children most of the time simply because I don't relate to small children well, but it is an interesting, diverse, important age group. I'm not much older now, actually, in the grand scheme of things, but I also thank you for what you've said because when I was younger, I guess I was a bit like the sort of child in question; well-read, (hopefully) intelligent, etc. etc. And even now, because I'm still young, people are impressed that I CAN hold my own so well as I can. It's always been difficult when people are so quick to judge simply because of a number. Through theatre especially, I've met many young people (even as young as ten years old) who are extremely accomplished, bright and witty. So, I applaud you!

Chita - I'm guessing about religion -- Jewish? based on the oy vey remark. And politics, if your avatar is an indication, we're definitely on the same page.

I also don't like unattractive people. Do we share that too?

Here's a slightly different perspective from someone who has had kids who were twelve. And my kids, at twelve, were as smart, witty, mature, and articulate as people twice their age...and could have rivaled the brightest of the bright right here on BWW. But they were still twelve. Yes, there are kids like gavrochegirl (who I am sure I would find delightful in person) who are well-spoken and wise beyond their years. But folks, they (and she) are still preteens.
Now, in my perfect world, rather than a "student board", there would have be an old fart (or old hands, maybe) board. But the world isn't perfect. And while I'm not a real hardliner on board delineation, I'm with Chita in wondering why this particular post is on the Main Board instead of the OT board. And frankly, if it was on the OT board, I'd be wondering why it wasn't on the Student Board where she could bond with other precocious Piazza loving teens. (Although I would have probably wondered *that* in silence...) I've know dozens of kids who were old for their years, and who invariably thought the world saw them as adults. But you know what? Thirty year olds don't think 12 year olds are thirty...unless they have ulterior motives. And for damn sure, a 50 year old can spot the difference a mile away.
We've had this discussion before, and to be sure, I am going off on a bit of a tangent. But to pretend that all age groups are interchangeable is a slippery slope. All *people* are equal regardless of age, but socially... and on message boards, all ages are not equivalent...nor are they inherently intermixable.
My points (they are general and NOT aimed at gavrochegirl in particular), since I've rambled:
1) There is nothing inferior about being under 21 (or 18; or 13)...but one needs to appreciate that not all adults are going to be interested in listening to everything you have to say. Nor are they going to necessarily welcome you into adult-oriented threads and banter.
2) There is nothing inheretly wrong with being over 50 (or 40; or 60)...but one needs to appreciaate that not all younger people are going to be interested in hearing what you have learned from experience.
3) There is nothing wrong with an adult, such as Chita, who has not chosen to work with children or to procreate, to prefer minimal interaction with kids.
Sigh.
Ooops. Edited because I just realized that it is NOT on the Main Board anymore... C'est la vie.

That's good. Hey, I'm 13 and I also adore this score. But in all fairness, was this board really necessary?
Ahem. Just my one-and-a-half (thoroughly useless) cents.

As many useless threads as there are out there... I kind of halfway agree.
I hate to sound cruel like this, but it kind of just seemed to be like, "Read this, and see how much more mature than other twelve year olds I am!"
Or maybe that's just me...

No, I actually thought the same thing. But I was afraid of getting bashed, so I attempted to say it in less-obvious words.

Coming from the other end of the age spectrum, that's exactly how the original post came across to me, too.
