I was talking about this with my family and while we all were in agreement that this was a bad thing that this vote didn't get passed, we felt that it was not the right political climate for this vote to be voted on for two major reasons.

The first one is that there was recently the **** hitting the fan upstate, which had people mad at Patterson. That Patterson knew that if he could get same sex marriage passed in the state, that people would remember him for doing this and that would help him out come November when he is up for a primary.

Furthermore, there were 35 people who were dead set against it. There was nothing that could be said or done to get them to change their minds. It was as if their minds were made up prior to the vote getting down onto the floor.

The very fact that it was voted on at all is the disgrace.

I think in 10-15 years from now, we will look back on this period with astonishment at how stubborn bigots were able to hold back chain for a time with crook, hook, fear, and a big old pack of lies.

It may be highly inappropriate, but I kept flashing to the song in Hairspray:

There's a light
In the darkness
Though the night
Is black as my skin
There's a light
Burning bright
Showing me the way
But i know where i've been

There's a cry
In the distance
It's a voice
That comes from deep within
There's a cry
Asking why
I pray the answer's up ahead
'Cause i know where i've been

There's a road
We've been travelin'
Lost so many on the way
But the riches
Will be plenty
Worth the price we
Had to pay

There's a dream
In the future
There's a struggle
We have yet to win
And there's pride
In my heart
'Cause i know
Where i'm going
And i know where i've been

This guy took my idea!

There are two equally hilarious comments in the thread. The first -

Ryan Platt, 32, who said he signed the petition in support of his lesbian sister, even though he thinks it would be overturned if voters approved it. "Even if by some miracle this did pass, it would never stand up to the federal government," Platt said. "And if it did, there's something really wrong with America."

Guess what, Ryan. There already IS something really wrong with America. Just because it hasn't yet been directed at straight people doesn't mean it's not a real problem.

Then there's this -

Other petition signers said they were motivated by a sincere interest to preserve marriages. One was Ervin Hulton, a 47-year-old dishwasher who said he believes in making it harder for couples to separate.

"The way I feel, why go out and spend all these tons of money for marriage, the photography and all that? And along down the line, it's going to shatter," said Hulton, who is single.

So that sanctity of marriage isn't about god to her, but money?

I think government has decided it's in their best interest to keep this issue at a boil - that way people don't focus on pesky little things like the shifting world economic foundation or the power plays taking place in the Middle and Far East that are neccessitating warfare.

Another example of why in NYS we have the most dysfuntional legislature in the land.

A few months ago, The NY Post had a photo of them with clown heads on. All I can say is the clowns deserve an apology. These guys have long since become known as a joke & they now have given reinforcement to this known fact.

The name of the game is not to do what is right but to do whatever it takes to stay in power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Once a politician gets elected, he (or she) becomes addicted to it.
