I'm nervous. The talks broke down and at midnight, no more rent stabilization. The landlords will be able to charge market rents when your lease is up. I'll have to leave NY, as market rent for my place is prob. between 3 and 4k.

The Governor has said that when the law is passed it will be retroactive. Hopefully this will deter landlords from taking advantage of the gap.

They've done this before. It could be all about scaring the tenants so that we'll be happy with any new increases they come up with rather than no stabilization. I hope that's the case.
Or, this is just another step in getting rid of the middle class in NYC. They want the entire population to be the one percenters.

Jane, that was Rockefeller's dream. Manhattan was to become the island of the rich with the support crew would inhabit the other bourough's.

Koch had no problem saying if it was too expensive for people to live in NYC then they just couldn't live there, oh well. Also, took no action on AIDS.

I guess they don't care that 2 million people will probably be put out of their homes.

No, why should they? They have theirs.

Broadway doesn't need a revival of Fiddler on the Roof. They can just look out the window and see the Anatevka number being performed live.

I'm still holding out for good news, though.

Goth is weirdly populist when things affect him directly.

Why is it the government's responsibility to make sure Goth can afford his apartment?

It's not supposed to disappear overnight. When our current leases expire, that's when it happens. Mine expires Oct. 1, others have up to another year plus before they're affected.

Technically, it's not. But when the government infringes on my finances, such as forcing me to buy health insurance, then I have to play by the government's rules and grab all the freebies I can get.

You were complaining about your tiny, rent-controlled apartment long before the ACA.

"You were complaining about your tiny, rent-controlled apartment long before the ACA."
He's on rent control? wow. Rent control means your rent could be $300 while the person next door with the exact same apt. on stabilization could be paying $3000. From what I understand, those on rent control have no lease, and do not pay the increases we pay. How can anyone complain about rent control?

Sorry, I meant stabilized. Even so, Goth is sucking off the teat of the government, which he was doing before the ACA.

But do you complain when your taxes are increased while the top 1% gets more and more tax breaks? Where is the outrage there?
