that depends what school you want to go to, as well as the department.
tisch admission requirements are different than gallatin, which in turn are different from steinhardt.
NYU can be fickle about their admissions decisions. I recommend a very sincere and NYU-specific personal statement.
After I applied with a GPA of well over 4.0, a long resume and my identity as an African-American male to boot, I was still rejected by CAS Sociology (and of course I ultimately didn't major in Sociology). Their explanation for the rejection? "We're looking for students with strong writing skills as evidenced by standardized test scores."
I scored an 800/800 on the SAT Writing.
Northwestern accepted me the next day and the rest is history.
"My best friend went to NYU for a year, but couldn't stand it and transferred to USC."
Not to knock NYU - especially since I just applied to it again for graduate study - but I've heard of retention problems as well. The low endowment lends to some severe financial aid difficulties that make the original poster's question about scholarships all the more timely. People come and have to leave early because the university just won't give them enough money. I also hear that the course offerings aren't strong across the board. Cinema Studies always looked great, but History, on the other hand...

I applied to NYU (Steinhardt). I have my audition in a few weeks, and then I'll wait to hear from them. My test scores were/are in the toilet. Really. I don't take standardized tests well, but I wrote my essay about my passion for learning and how my SAT scores do not reflect my true academic profile. I keep debating whether I want to go to NYU because if they truly judge a student on test scores, why would I want to go there? We'll see where I get in. I actually would love to go to Sarah Lawrence because I love their style of thinking and teaching, but I change my mind everyday. The college process is quite stressful.

Does anyone know about the business school at NYU? How is it? Are they extremely fickle with their admissions too?
I applied to NYU, and I have a feeling I won't get it. Mainly because I waited to apply until the last minute. My grades are above average (I am in the top 10 of my class) and my SAT scores were suprisingly better the second time. However, I rushed a bit on the essay, and I think that's going to hurt me.
Advice to you upcoming applicants: do not wait until last minute!
I got accepted into the University of CT (I live in CT, and a bunch of students in my school applied there) and Quinnipiac University. I also applied to Boston University, but I won't hear from them until March or April.

There are two theater departments at NYU. One is in Tisch and one is in Steinhardt. You should look into both of them because they both focus on different things. The people that I know that graduated from NYU theater programs regretted not going to a school with a better industry night. The people that I know that are there now are loving being in the city while going to school, slowing getting used to the style of living. So I guess it depends on you.
I got into NYU and I didnt have a 3.7, but my SAT scores were good and I had great rec letters cuz all my teachers loved me. I also had a very personal essay. The key to applying for scholarships (outside scholarships) is mostly to know who you are- if youre a minority, use it. if you plan on concentrating on science, use that. there are all kinds of specialty scholarships around. The amount of money NYU will just give to you probably wont be that impressive unless you can get into the scholars program, in which case you have to maintain a certain gpa or lose it.
I think the business school is one of the snobbier parts of NYU, so weird... they got booed at graduation, it was hysterical.
I loved every minute of the school. Sadly, sometimes they end up filling quotas. My brother didnt get into the school of his choice with better scores and grades than a kid who did from the same high school, but the kid who got in was a minority so we figure thats why. It happens everywhere, not just NYU.
I go to NYU, and I could not possibly love it more.
I honestly have not had a bad professor yet, and I have had several professors that I LOVED. And several that I had heard of before I even signed up for class (because of plays or books they'd written, etc.).
It was easy to make friends here; city schools get such a bad rap for not being social homey environments- it's bull****.
I mean, NYU isn't for everyone. Definitely explore lots of college options if you're a senior or junior in high school. And VISIT colleges too. That's important.
NYU has a few different schools. Steinhardt is the School of Education. They have majors like Music Performance, Education, Art, Psychology, Nutrition, and MANY MANY MORE. The Music Theater major is also here, which is very different from Musical Theater. (Getting to that soon.)
Tisch is the School of the Arts. There are majors such as Film and Television, Photo and Imaging, Dramatic Writing, Dance, Cinema Studies, Recorded Music, and of course, Acting. The acting program is, obviously, huge. There are many different studios, all of which teach different acting techniques and have different curriculums (curriculi? I don't know; It's late.) They cannot be summarized completely in a brief sentence, because they are all complicated and interesting, but I will try to remember most of them. There is CAP21 (the musical theater studio), Stella Adler (obviously teaches Adler technique), ETW (experimental theatre wing), Atlantic (which I know not too much about), Meisner (Meisner technique), Straussberg (I know they do some dance...), Playwright's Horizons (they do directing as well as acting, and they do a lot of other stuff too).
Stern is the business school. They have majors like accounting and marketing and business.
Gallatin is the school of individualized study. You can create your own major here. It is a unique school, which has incredible opportunities for students who want to do interdisciplinary things, and combine their interests. There are few schools like it.
There is also the school of Social Work.
Oh, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Which has ALL THE MAJORS that aren't in the other schools. Like Journalism. And French. Etc.
I have met probably a total of three people here who don't like NYU. The majority of people I know LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I honestly feel like I learn about interesting, important things that I care about in every class.
And everyone here is SOOOO passionate about what they're studying, no matter what school they're in. I have friends in lots of different programs, and I've heard good things about each one.
As far as getting in goes, I had a 1510 and a 4.0 GPA, and I was beyond involved in extracurriculars in high school. I practically lived at school. But I know people that have gotten in with totally varied profiles, backgrounds, scores, grades, etc.. If you want to go somewhere, apply and do your best at all of the essays, forms, etc. If you think an interview will help, do it. Don't not apply to a school you love because you feel your "numbers are off".
As a disclaimer, I do not pretend to be an NYU expert. I just wanted to share what I knew because I thought it might be of some help, and I felt like I had SOME of the info you guys were looking for.
Oh, and fastweb.com is a great scholarship site. I swear by it.
