It seemed unrealistic for anyone to receive a full ride. Well thanks for all the advice. Also, how do they decide who gets the scholarships at tisch? I mean i know its based off of your talent but what else? Is it how much they like you? When you audition should you be over the top and show how much you know about the school and the different studios?

I have no idea how they decide to give out the regular old Tisch scholarships. I'd imagine it's financial need more than anything. I got a $12,000 one and I certainly wasn't over the top at the auditions. I WOULD go into the auditions having done some research on the various studios, just so you know which one you'd answer with if they ask you what you'd prefer. I wouldn't do it to impress anyone, though--nobody likes to see people coming into the auditions trying too hard.

Well, perhaps things have changed, but the young man that I am referring to DID get a full scholarship, covering tution, room, board, books, etc with the final number at the bottom of the award letter totalling $52,000. He applied ED as an acting major. His grades are excellent at a tough prep school, he had a terrific resume and turned in a wonderful audition. Numerous people saw the letter(and it said nothing about "loans"), just that the total amount of financial aid awarded totaled $52K. It is a fact that students who apply ED get the most money and just maybe this boy filled a particular need in a particular studio at this point in time. What ever the case, we are happy for him and I would hope that this encourages others to go after what they really want and to know that it is possible to achieve that dream. The 2 schools here ( 1 boys, 1 girls) have put 3 students in NYU in the past 3 years and one of those was in CAP 21, which shows that it is possible to go to a top school even if you don't come from an area with a great deal of theatre "connections". Good luck to those of you still auditioning!

stonewall, as I said, no one gets that kind of merit scholarship. Have a look at the NYU fast facts page:

http://admissions.nyu.edu/explore.nyu/fast.facts.html

Scroll down to financial aid and you'll see that, as I said, the largest merit scholarship award is $25,000. And that is not available in Tisch. I graduated last year, I was at NYU for four years, I visited and knew people at Tisch for approximately four years prior to auditionining in 2002. I have many friends who received aid while a student there, many of whom had a very low EFC for FAFSA. None, not a single one, received a financial aid package which covered ALL of their expenses, not even with loans, not even close. So, I don't know what this kid is telling people about getting a full ride at $52,000 but it just isn't possible. Doesn't happen. I don't want kids who are potential applicants to think that it's possible. All they need to do is to call the financial aid office, or read the NYU community livejournal to know that it doesn't happen.

"Numerous people saw the letter(and it said nothing about "loans"), just that the total amount of financial aid awarded totaled $52K. "

Stonewall, I got the VERY same letter. (Except that it totalled $50,000--my housing must be cheaper because I got financial aid to cover all my costs). My letter said that my financial aid award was $50,000 and it did not say a thing about loans.

Now, if you look at the breakdown sheet of that award (which was probably included in the same packet or listed somewhere in their financial aid accounts online)--in other words where exactly the money was coming from and how much each source was giving, you'd probably see that a significant amount of it was probably loans. Somehow this said student must have conveniently not shown you that (separate) sheet. No one gets a free ride to NYU, I promise you. The only exception may be children of faculty members who somehow manage to get scholarships covering their housing/mealplans or students who have gotten scholarships from elsewhere. But NYU will NOT just give anyone a free ride.

So, erin, I will contradict you here. People get financial aid packages that cover everything. I have one; it has nothing to do with merit and everything to do with financial need. If you were accepted to the school based on your own merit, but you and your family cannot (and I do really mean CANNOT in any way or by any stretch of the imagination) afford to pay for anything upfront, they will work with you and it is possible to get a financial aid package that covers all your expenses. I have one. But, stonewall, they will NOT give out $52,000 of scholarships to one person.

Also, I don't know about it being a "fact" that applying ED means you get more money. I did not apply early decision and got more scholarship money than most people I know who did.

Getting financial aid is not the same thing as getting a scholarship. It is conceivable that an aid PACKAGE covers a huge amount, but that package is going to be part loans and part grant money. I agree with Erinrebecca that it is impossible to get a full ride SCHOLARSHIP worth $52,000 to NYU/TISCH. The largest merit award is $25,000 (rare) and I don't know if that is available at Tisch or if the highest scholarship at Tisch is $20,000. A student who wins such a scholarship may have a financial aid PACKAGE that totals more but not a scholarship/ride that totals more.

I have a child at NYU/Tisch at present who is a junior. She was awarded the Tisch Trustee Scholarship for $20,000/year for four years and I know there are not too many of these. I believe it is based on both artistic and academic merit and the amount of the scholarship, while merit based, can be affected by NEED. My daughter was also a need based financial aid applicant/recipient. Her package is greater than the Trustee Scholarship but the Scholarship doesn't go over $20,000/year (total of $80,000).

I want to clarify one minor misconception in Erinrebecca's post in that she referred to the Tisch Scholarship recipients as Tisch Scholars. My daughter is ALSO a Tisch Scholar but this is SEPARATE from MERIT AWARDS such as her Tisch Trustee Scholarship. Tisch does select about 15-18 applicants to all of Tisch per year to be Tisch Scholars but there is NO money involved. Tisch Scholars are selected based on artistic and academic merit, leadership and community service as potential leaders in the arts. You can be a Tisch Scholar and receive NO merit aid or any financial aid for that matter. You can recieve a Trustee Scholarship and never be selected as a Tisch Scholar. These are separate. Tisch Scholars has some monetary benefits of sorts in that you get to go on two all expense paid trips....one in the US and one to a foreign country, which my daughter has been fortunate to do with Tisch Scholars.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.

PS, my daughter got in Regular Decision to CAP21 and specified a second and third choice studio after CAP and for that matter, attended a rural public high school with no drama classes.

I will back up a few others. I'm in Tisch. I got a $53,000 total aid package, $7,000 of which is scholarships.

Theatredude: you should definitely sing Broadway showtunes at your audition, no pop. It asks for two contrasting songs, commonly thought of as uptempo and ballad, but also remember this includes contemporary and standard (pre-1960's). So for your best bet, sing an uptempo contemporary (preferably something NOT currently on Broadway) and a standard ballad, or vice versa. They like to know what your voice can handle.

While it might seem as if CAP is the be-all and end-all of musical theatre, this is actually not true. I tried out for CAP, didn't make it, got placed in Strasberg, and am quite happy. I am almost exclusively a musical theatre person, but it's great because we actually have dance classes (ballet, tap, jazz, and tai chi) as well as 6 hours of voice classes a week, including song performance. In one of my acting classes, we even all had to do a musical theatre scene. Third year, there is a Musical Theatre Practicum, and they have put on Jesus Christ Superstar, Company, ...Forum, and we are now doing Nine the Musical. A lot of the people in the Practicum are getting professional jobs in musical theatre and summer stock and might I add, have voices to rival or top anyone in CAP. I plan on doing the CAP summer program this summer, and could switch into CAP if I wanted to. But Strasberg is great because you actually get a good solid acting technique to fall back on, and that is something that CAP kids do not get.

So that's a thought.

HAH. But scholarships are school-specific. I am not in Tisch/Steinhardt.
