Say you support humane immigration reform. Be ready with your name and the name of your county. Say you want your Senator to support the Kennedy/McCain bill. NOT the Frist bill, under any circumstances.
Here's a really simple summary of the reform suggestions so far.

Abba, not so much "don't vote on this" as "don't vote to pass the Frist bill", I think.
*hugs Canadian flag* We WANT immigrants. Skilled workers and cultural diversity is encouraged here, and we're got many jobs available and not enough people to fill them.
I won't even touch this "third worlders", immigrant, refugee thing. My temples throb just seeing some of what's been said here.

Plum, can you please provide a legal to a non-partisan summary of the proposed law?
I have heard both positive and negative things about the Bill, and do not see a link on your first post.
I do not agree with the McCain-Feingold bill because I do not thing amnesty should be given again. It was tried once, and it did not solve the problem.
This is a huge problem, that involves multiple social/economic and political issues. As someone born and raised in Los Angeles, I have seen them develop and become more strained first hand.
Our southern border is woefully unprotected, with not only humans being smuggled and transported, but large quantities of drugs coming over.
Something has to be done, but I am just not sure what.

I'm in that boat - I've got no opinion yet, because I haven't read an unbiased report on what the bill would entail.
I'm more riled at some of the comments on here that aren't related to HR4437.

Yeah, stop illegal immigrants. Go ahead. Let's see how many americans are going to line up to go work the fields, pick apples, work on your lawns. Because then their salaries will go up, and guess what? The cost of those apples and other produce will skyrocket.
Yes, something should be done. But this is the wrong way to go about it.

I'll try to find something for you, YouWantItWhen, but I don't see how there can be any debate about a bill that makes good samaritans into felons.
You see someone injured on the street, are you going to ask if they're an illegal immigrant before you help them? What if they say yes?

Name-calling will not improve your shoddy argument, chita33.
Americans have historically been against immigration for quite some time and have had it forced on them politically. That is the reality. There are plenty of books on the subject documenting this.
Businesses want cheap labor and they don't want to pay union wages.
I'm not going to bow to your vision of political correctness. I think you're dead wrong. Your arguments don't impress me.

Posted: 3/25/06 at 7:59pmI have nothing against cultural diversity but I'm saying for it to be essential to learn someone elses customs! You go to say Mexico and the people over there are not gonna bend backwards for Americans or any other group your just gonna have to adapt to Mexican culture the people coming here illegally aren't doing that and that's going to be a problem for many native Americans say 10 20 years from now.

I have shoddy arguments? Dear lord.
Okay, let me turn around for a minute. I'm also an Israeli citizen. Israel has a policy of automatically giving citizenship to anyone who is Jewish. But you know what? I don't want Americans coming to my home country. They're rude and smelly and xenophobic, and frankly, their stance on gay rights is downright primitive. Get out, americaim!

Posted: 3/25/06 at 8:03pmI have no ideas as to what they should do, I just don't like the fact that I and people I know have to be affected because of others. Even if it's things like learning a new language, I don't like that it has to be mandatory when other countries would never be so kind. I'm just getting out some smoke though so sorry if I sound harsh.

Okay, this is a partisan summary, but it does give a reasonable point-by-point summary of much of the bill's most egregious contents. If you want to read the actual bill, just Google it. It's all there.

You don't care what happens, as long as it doesn't affect you? Great, Burlesquebabe. But don't come crying to me when your civil rights are the next to go.
On the V for Vendetta thread, you wrote that you couldn't wait to see the movie. What fun! Let's watch a movie about an entirely theoretical fascist government being brought down by a guy in a Guy Fawkes mask! What a great escapist fantasy completely removed from our political situation today!

Listen to yourself. You talk about how you don't want those damn "third worlders" to come here because of their retrograde stance on women's rights, as if America is this perfect beacon of shining hope?
Well, Israel is further ahead than America as far as gay rights go, so I really don't want American troglodytes coming over and ruining it for all the queers in my native country.
Same argument. It only sounds ridiculous because it is.

"I'm against illgeal immigration too it's taking its toll on America; language wise and economically the immigrants (most atleast) buy some one room shack and stuff about 20 of them in there, my sister's apartment is practically a hotel and they take all the water and play their music loudly. That last part was just rambling on my behalf so I don't speak for all illegal immigrants but Congress NEEDS to do something fast!"
Burlesque why are you worried about the English language? You posts are evidence that you clearly have little regard for "foreigners" or English.

When I checked the summary, I did not see the good-samaritan language. It seemed to only apply if you were aiding and assisting in the illegal entry, or transporting someone with That does not mean I agree with the proposed law, but am just wondering if I am missing something.
The only thing I could find was the following was prohibited in Section 202(a) of the proposed law;
`(D) transports or moves a person in the United States, knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such person is an alien who lacks lawful authority to enter or be in the United States, where the transportation or movement will aid or further in any manner the person's illegal entry into or illegal presence in the United States;
`(E) harbors, conceals, or shields from detection a person in the United States knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such person is an alien who lacks lawful authority to be in the United States;"
I did not have time to review the entire proposed bill, and am wondering whether there is something else being referenced, or whether this is the clause being referenced. If so, I am not sure I agree with their interpretation.
And, the summary you provided seems to be referencing the same provision:
"Anyone or any organization who “assists” an individual without documentation “to reside in or remain” in the United States knowingly or with “reckless disregard” as to the individual’s legal status would be liable for criminal penalties and five years in prison. This could include church personnel who provide shelter or other basic needs assistance to an undocumented individual. Property used in this act would be subject to seizure and forfeiture."
This is not quite the same as any good samaritan driving down the street and helping someone who is injured.

So let me sum up the xonophobe's creed:
Everyone should just stay where they are. No mixing of languages or cultures, no travel, no movement, no evolution. Because that's how things have always been and how they should stay.
Speaking as an immigrant daughter of immigrants grandaughter of immigrants great-great grandaughter of immigrants descended from more immigrants...I disagree. Maybe it comes of being in the minority, and an outsider, almost wherever I go. What status quo is there for me to preserve?

YouWantItWhen, the whole idea is that it expands the meaning of "alien transport" to mean providing almost any kind of help to illegals.
where the transportation or movement will aid or further in any manner the person's illegal entry into or illegal presence
So...drive someone to the hospital, and you're breaking the law.

over there are not gonna bend backwards for Americans or any other group
Are you kidding me? Have you been to Latin America recently? We (yep, latino, first generation) don't bend backwards for Americans, Americans basically make it happen. They have their own private schools, shop at the American stores... granted, people welcome these things.
My God... can anyone say Germany in the 30's?

I have to disagree with you on that interpretation.
Perhaps in a very aggressive interpretation you could say that by not letting someone die you are aiding their presence, but my reading of this clause seems to be targeting groups that are organized to facilitate illegal entry into the country, or hide illegal immigrants from detection once they arrive.
Some people consider those groups that work to shield immigrants from detection once they are here the underground railroad of the 21st Century. Other think these groups are blindly ignoring facilitating the violation of immigration laws.
Again, I am not sure what the answer is. This bill looks too aggressive to be enforceable.
