New App Will Help You Read An Entire Novel In 90 Minutes

I'm sure authors everywhere are just thrilled. I don't see this catching on.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

This is just the speed reading program we were given in the late 60's in Grammar School. Only back then it was this automated slide projection thingy.

In a goal-oriented world, I'm sure people will be interested.

And if getting to the finish line first is the goal, and not comprehension, I think it will do very well.

Where's the fun in that? Part of the fun of reading is being able to kick back and relax.

That being said this could catch on with high school and college students. Have to read The Scarlet Letter? No problem. I could have used it for my "Literature of the Absurd" in college.

I haven't tried it, but it does say that comprehension shouldn't be affected.

I think it's a neat idea, but unless I could do it on my Kindle I don't think I could do it. If I try to read a book on a phone/tablet screen it hurts my eyes after a while.

If by comprehension you mean a basic understanding the words you read, then no. I mean actually thinking about the material and processing the ideas. There's no time for that if you're racing to the finish line, so I disagree. You'll "get" all the words, but you won't comprehend them.

I saw a story online debunking this approach. Like Best12 said, it's about comprehension. I tried the sample and it wasn't very enjoyable. I felt drained after reading a few sentences. What's the point of reading a book, if you can't take pleasure in actually reading it at your own pace?!

When I saw this yesterday my first reaction was that I would have no interest in reading a novel this way.

But, for the reports, papers, industry trades and other business-related reading that I have to do, I would welcome the opportunity to find a way to increase speed without sacrificing comprehension.

Do you think you would have time to consider an idea presented to you, reading at that speed? That's what I mean by comprehension, which is the larger definition of the word. I mean grasping the ideas. Not just understand the words as written as they fly in front you.

I"m guessing you're an asshole. But I didn't need any additional time to process that thought.

Wow.

To answer your question, Yes. I do believe I can process a thought if I read something more quickly than usual. I can also spend time thinking about it when I've completed the reading.

I also believe our brains are capable of processing thoughts at different rates, and in different ways. Reading in a new way allows our brains to process thoughts in a new way, as well.

It then becomes choice. I love the way I currently read novels, and don't look for a way to change it. But, if I have a system to get through other required reading in a way that leaves more time for other work, I embrace that.

I keep thinking of the commercials for the Evelyn Wood speed reading course which was big in the 70s!
