And Margo was feeling too gay ... HA!

When I was a child in the early 50's, I used to love to go to my grandmothers house so I could eat off of the "green dishes" with the funny shapes. I guess I should have known then that I was destined to be gay.
As I grew older, my grandmother would ask what I wanted from her home when she passed away. My only want were those "green dishes", of course by then,I knew what they really were and I coveted them.
When my grandmother passed in the late 70's, I helped my Dad with making the funeral arrangements. By the time we arrived back at my grandma's house...it looked like a hurricane had blown through. Drawers pulled out, furniture carted off, paintings off the wall, and of course my beloved Fiesta Ware nowhere in sight. My aunt and her two daughters had completely ransacked the place, no apologies, no excuses, and absolutely unwilling to give anything back.
To this day I still resent them for that. I haven't seen those dishes in years, but I still have the greatest memories of dinner at Grandma's.

JAG, that's horrible. I think every family has one of those.
I think I might get kicked out of the club for this next statement: I've never heard of Fiestaware until this thread!

I'm a softee for dinnerware & glasses. My Sango is out this year.
Love the PESTO! It co-ordinates with my black, white and charcoal grey summer kitchen.
I will be ordering extra pesto dinner plates as I eventually break them one by one.

No..no....they're already brain damanged enough. I don't think I'd like to see what the consequences of lead poisoning would do to them. Besides, in the scheme of things...they were just dishes. MY DISHES!! But nonetheless, just dishes.

Posted: 6/14/06 at 11:07pmI collected Riviera ware-anyone familiar with that?

Oh, Riviera is VERY cool. It's hard to find in mint condition as the thin edges of the square plates often got chipped. The Periwinkle blue is my favorite Riviera color. I have a few of the solid-color pieces (no butter-dish, though. VERY expensive) though I prefer the Mexican-decaled lines on Riviera shapes: "Mexicana", "Hacienda" and "Conchita" (have mostly "Mexicana", a few "Hacienda" and no "Conchita").
My Fiesta collection is limited to only the original 1930s colors: Red, Cobalt, Ivory, Yellow, Green & Turquoise. I punched it up in recent years by adding 1950s Forest Green, but I generally am not fond of the '50s colors - though "Medium Green" is the most coveted '50s color, it's much too expensive. And the cooloest '30s shapes (the water carafe, the vases, the marmalde and the mustard jars) were mostly discontinued by 1946.
Another favorite is the American Limoges "Posey Shop" pattern.
Yes, I am a Dish Queen. In a very majorly way.

Wow, there is an entire sub-culture of "Fiestaware-ites" that I was completely unaware of.
Perhaps I need to make a conscious effort to look into getting some Fiestaware.

Jane:
I've got a few pieces of Rivieva (including those elusive butter dishes in red and blue).
I'm more partial to Harlequin (also made by the Homer Laughlin Company for sale in Woolworths) and designed by Rhead (the same guy did Fiesta and Riviera). I really like the lines of Harlequin -- much more of an Art Deco feeling than even Fiesta. Harlequin is also usually cheaper than Fiesta. But like Riviera, it is thinner and more apt to chip.

Boobs...that's because your apartment is too small.
I think I am too lazy to be this gay.

Dottie:
Many department stores (Bloomies, Macys, Dillards, etc) sell new Fiesta. Or you can look at the website for the Homer Laughlin Company (the maker) at www.hlchina.com.
One of the best places to look at old Fiesta is on eBay. There are hundreds of pieces for sale there at any time. Once you recognuze the 'look', you can often find it in antique shops, etc.
