New York Hotels

I have reservations at Skyline Hotel in July and my daughter-in-law is somewhat worried about the quality of the hotel. I made the reservation there because I had read some good reviews of the place but I quess she has read some not so positive reviews. Has anyone stayed there that has any input. Or does anyone have any suggestions as to good deals going on right now. I have used priceline before and it has been good but we have three or four people this trip and sometimes that causes problems with priceline hotels like last year when we had a king size bed and one rollaway for 4 people. Any input would be great.

re: New York Hotels

I would suggest The Pierre or my personal favorite The Plaza. The Plaza has some beautiful rooms with views of Central Park and the service is amazing. The Pierre is gorgeous old hotel that reminds me somewhat of the Hotel Trocodaro in Paris.

re: New York Hotels

I recommended this on another thread, but...

Hotel 31, on East 31st Street. It's seriously one of NY's hidden treasures. I've stayed there for years and never had anything less than an immaculate room and gracious staff. Plus, it's dirt cheap, by NY standards: when I go alone, I usually pay about 65 a night. The one year Michael came with me, the room was 75 a night. Seriously, it doesn't get much better.

The Belvedere on (I believe) west 48th St between 8th and 9th is actually really good. It's a bit gaudy but the prices are fairly affordable and it's on a nice street and close to midtown.

re: New York Hotels

When I drive into the City which is at least 2 times a month I always park at the Skyline Hotel...they have the best price on parking. Now I never stayed in the rooms but I have been in the lobby to use the bathroom and everything seemed to be clean and neat. I'm very fussy about Hotel rooms and I would not think twice about staying at the Skyline Hotel. I like that it is in walking distance to everything, but not in the center of Times Square.

I used to produce a tv show that is in Hotels.
The Hotel you are talking about is very scary.
What is your budget? I would not stay there under any circumstances.
Check out Hotels.com and get a discounted room at the top tier hotels.
My brother came to visit me and he stayed at the Waldorf for 100 a night.
The Waldorf has tiny rooms but at least it is close to theater and clean.
My favorite hotel is the St Regis!

I don't know Corine2 but she seems to be pretty sharp. I would take that advice if I were you. It's better to pay a little more and be in a place that you know has a good reputation and is in a safe part of town.

re: New York Hotels

The 2 places I'd suggest are The Excelsior Hotel @ 45 W.81 St. It's right across the street from the MoNH, and so close to the great resurants of Columbus and Amsterdam Aves. Another nice place and my fav is Sofitel New York @45 W 48th St. Really close to shopping on 5th and a shortwalk to the theater district. These both are a bit pricey but you can get good deals if you do a little hunting. Good luck and let us know how things worked out where ever you stayed.

Thanks Broadway Diva.
I know about NYC and NYC Tourism.
You could say I love NYC.
That hotel is really a hole in the ground and full of riff raff.
PM me honey if i can further assist you.
Check out the NYC and Company website for other hotels.

re: New York Hotels

Thank you all for your insight. I too respect Corrine2 as I have been reading the boards for awhile. Luckily my reservation is cancelable. I have been searching and found a couple of possible good deals. What about the Buckingham Hotel or the Flathotel. I'm trying to stay close to the theater district because the two people I'm going with have never been to New York before.

re: New York Hotels

Broadway addict.
Those hotels are ok and safe. I have never seen the inside or rooms though.
Check out The Waldorf, The Hudson, The Westin.
They are bigger and safer.
The Hudson is really hip and trendy. Also very expensive.
Check discount sites because you may luck out like My brother and get a four star hotel for a mere pittance.
Cheers,

re: New York Hotels

If you're looking for a smaller boutique hotel there are some amazing ones. The City Club hotel is wonderful (a lot of celebs stay there), The Roger Smith, the Fitzpatrick (grand central location), The Library Hotel - all wonderful.

I don't reccomend the Grand Central Hyatt

re: New York Hotels

Mamie
I stayed at Murray Hill East Suites and it was very nice. We had a one bedroom suite on the first floor and it was very clean and the people were very nice. The only problem was it was a little out of the way to get back and forth to the theater district. Once we found the Times Square Shuttle subway it worked better because then we only had to walk a couple blocks to grand central. I would stay there again though and I enjoyed having a full kitchen which saved on food.

re: New York Hotels

Thanks bwayaddict. The shuttle you mentioned is the #7 that runs cross town between 42nd St. and Grand Central - yes?
I'm assuming it runs all night.

re: New York Hotels

The shuttle is actually a separate subway that just runs back and forth between Grand Central Station and Times Square. It is the S line (in a gray circle). The 7 also works but makes other stops as well and is less frequent. However the shuttle only runs from 6am - midnight - beyond that you have to take the 7.

re: New York Hotels

Yes Mamie I think that was it but I'm not sure it runs all night. I am not a subway expert though. I only know we were coming back from Papermill Playhouse after seeing Baby and it was after midnight and we had to walk a ways and Murray Hill East is in a pretty safe area but there were not many people around which was a little scary.

shesings - thanks loads. I'd probably sit at the station waiting for a 7 and let the S go on by. Thanks everyone.

re: New York Hotels

I find nothing wrong with the Skyline - good price ($99), nice rooms (bigger than most), nice lobby and restaurant. The only problem is the location. I would not reccomend walking back after an evening at the theatre without a male escort. I'm sorry if that sounds sexist, but it's true.

If you are willing to pay for a cab after dark, then it's fine.

re: New York Hotels

Jon,
That area is terrible. I was almost mugged there once.
Mamie be very careful.
Take care.
It is true. It is not a hotel for women to stay at alone.
You can find many hotels in that price range. You don't need a big room you will only sleep in the room.
The rest of the time hopefully you will be eating and watching great theater and taking advantage of NYC CULTURE.
Get a smaller room that is safe.

re: New York Hotels

A really good reviews site is:

www.tripadvisor.com

Type the hotel in question in the search box on the left. It's fabulous and unbiased (at least theoretically) reviews from other tourists, and there's even a ranking of the best to worst hotels. I believe the #1 rant hotel in NYC on the site is the Doubletree Suites Times Square. I stayed there. It's not too bad, but the price is somewhat steep. For a budget, I'd recommend the Super 8. Very cheap, AND it includes free internet, printer, AND breakfast!

The Westin Times Square is my favorite hotel with the W Times Square close behind. If you enroll in starwood's preferred guest program weekend rates this summer are about $169.

re: New York Hotels

I have stayed at the Skyline recently and the rooms were very nice. In fact, they are larger and more comfortable than many other hotels in the area. It's located on the edge of Hell's Kitchen which has a bad reputation from many years ago. I didn't find it all scrarey, sleazy or dangerous. Like any part of NYC, there is a potential for muggings especailly if you look like a disoriented tourist. I found the area to be very charming in that typical older NYC style. Old brownstones, small grocery markets and some great restaurants. We were two gay men but, men. So that may have made it a bit safer than women being alone.

re: New York Hotels

You are so full of it Orion. re: New York Hotels

I thought you would never stay anywhere but The Plaza or Parker Meridien unless you were staying at your friends apartment. Hells Kitchen? Give me a break you goof. The closest you ever got to Hells Kitchen was when you were comped a suite at The Time and stayed on 49th and Broadway.
