My friend and I are planning on having a New York-themed movie night next week. What would be some good movies to watch? So far all I've come up with are When Harry Met Sally and DOwn with Love. Thanks
Manhattan! Annie Hall! West Side Story!

Keep in mind I'm going to New York soon, and I don't want any movies that will scare me out of going.

Maid In Manhattan. I'm just kidding. That movie gave New York a bad rep. When Harry Met Sally is a good one. Can't say the same about Down With Love though.
I live in New York and I can't think of anything. I can think of San Francisco or Chicago movies but not any New York ones.

Ghostbusters, The Goodbye Girl (Original from 1976), and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Okay, the first is just funny if you are into that sort of thing. But it did take place in New York.
Sunday In New York
Arthur
On The Town
Me Natalie. (The movie is hard to get and totally locked into the 60's but it made me want to move to NY!)
Godspell gives you some great views. (Part was filmed on the roof of WTC)
Hannah and her Sisters
Rosemary's Baby
Hair
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Barefoot in the Park
Go see the SEX AND THE CITY movie!
Live the Bohemian Life: MIDNIGHT COWBOY, DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, STRANGER THAN PARADISE, TIMES SQUARE, SHORTBUS
Dark times: KLUTE, SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK, TAXI DRIVER, and the hugely underrated 25TH HOUR
Tres Swank: SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, INFAMOUS, MANHATTAN

And, of course, NEW YORK STORIES...but skip the Coppola segment.

Buster Keaton's THE CAMERAMAN. Lots of amazing location shots of 1920s New York City.
THE FRENCH CONNECTION
Why didn't I think of TAXI DRIVER, KLUTE, or MIDNIGHT COWBOY?!?! They're three of my favorites.
And even though it takes place in Paris and not New York, I highly recommend Roman Polanski's THE TENANT. The paranoia surrounding apartment dwellers pretty New York.

This I'm afraid doesn't apply to your movie night, but as long as the discussion is on New York - themed movies, I can't go without my mentioning WINDJAMMER - The Voyage of the Christian Radich (1958 ) filmed in 3-screen Cinemiracle. There are only occasional showings of this film in its cinemiracle format at one theatre in America and one in the UK. It needs to be restored and put on BLu-ray.
The film follows the voyage of a sailing ship from Norway to New York City ( that's where it ties to this thread). The scenes of NYC as the sailing ship enters the harbor and the Norwegian sailors exploring the city are priceless. It's a family film, so it doesn't show everything sailors do when they hit a port, but these are young cadets anyway.
WINDJAMMER is really a musical. There are both folk-song sequences and classical music sequences (the latter with the Boston Pops Symphony Orchestra). The narration is a bit dated, but the film is great for showing scenes of New York, Boston, New Orleans, San Juan, Oslo, Madeira, Trinidad, Port-of-Spain etc. in the 1950's.
