re: new york welcomes popcultureboy!

All this visiting NYC talk and theaters and reading of poppy's fab trip really makes me want to take a detour on my trip to DC...

D--the Kerr (Doubt, 48th) is across the street from the Longacre (Virginia Woolf). The Kerr is directly south of the O'Neill (Good Vibrations, 49th)

You can all read my review of the Sondheim birthday concert in the "Dear Doxy" thread on the main board. What a night!

re: new york welcomes popcultureboy!

I attempted and failed to get tickets to Pillowman last night. Boo hoo. I was so exhausted after my raucous evening though that it was probably for the best. Seeing Romance tonight.....

re: new york welcomes popcultureboy!

Absolutely. Tomorrow at 2pm for sure. I have a ticket to 700 Sundays tomorrow at 8pm (the only ticket they had all freaking week, stupid Easter break) so I will cross my fingers Pillowman is on tkts tomorrow matinee. But I doubt it. And my bank card got declined this morning even though I checked and I have tons of money. Worrying.

they're probably just confused by all of the transactions in dollars? Or the length of time they've been made over here?

re: new york welcomes popcultureboy!

Only started using it on Saturday, so it could be that as I haven't used it in 3 weeks and now I am suddenly using it abroad, they suspect foul play. But I wish it had deferred and not declined, as I can't call the bank.....

No I can't enquire online, annoyingly. And there is a call number but nobody has a land line or international calls on their cell phones.

That's where a $5 calling card and a payphone come in handy.

bumps for Poppy...

How was 700 Sundays? And what's left on the agenda?

re: new york welcomes popcultureboy!

Ok so my financial woes are over, luckily. But I would like to make a special mention here for a certain website (rhymes with maywill.bom) which has the most fantastically inaccurate running times listed. I saw 700 Sundays last night which according to them is 2 hours and 10 minutes. So I arranged the rest of my evening with that in mind. And then I discover AT INTERMISSION that in fact the show is a just short of 3 hours. Which scuppered everything.

The show itself was very funny and very moving but it's not quite the second coming the reviews would have it be. Now I need to fit in Ave Q, Pillowman and Streetcar.....

Ok so Pillowman is the best thing I have seen since I got here. My GOD it's amazing. And it's a shame for Bill Irwin, who does deserve it, but I think Billy Crudup will win the Tony.

re: new york welcomes popcultureboy!

Really, Poppy? I still have to go with Doubt, Cherry Jones and Irwin, although Turner and Crudup are still close contenders.

re: new york welcomes popcultureboy!

I have to agree about Cruddup. And, though I left the theatre shell-shocked, I have tickets to see Pillowman again.

re: new york welcomes popcultureboy!

Singer, I think Doubt is a better, more tightly constructed play that will win the Tony but Pillowman actually disturbed my sleep, something that Doubt didn't manage to do. And why I think Crudup will win over Irwin is the role is showier. Irwin is amazing, but he is understated perfection. Crudup has several grandstanding monologues, he screams, he shouts, he cries, he's hardly offstage to boot. That's what will clinch it for him.

And Cookie, Q is sold out, every single seat, right the way through into next week, so I will have to catch it on my return. I think tonight I will see Dessa Rose if it is still on TKTS.
