It's been a few years since I posted a "I'm in a show" thread. But this is pretty neat show. Last week, I started rehearsal(s) for a stage adaptation of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Obviously, there are some things we can't do onstage, but we are going to incoporate the swirl hill (somehow, I don't know exactly how just yet!)
One of my friends started up a theatre company and this their first show of the season. They had auditions back in August, and I went thinking that I'd probably end up in the ensemble. I didn't get a callback but the next day they called and offered me the role of Sally.
The show opens in December and will run December 4, 5, and 6. Not sure of the specific times yet but I'll update when I know more. Hopefully, some of you can come see it (although it's going to be in New Hampshire).
eta: The show was a success!

I've always wanted to see a stage version.
Now THIS would be an interesting show to see onstage.
What a blast! Break a leg PM!
(are they gonna have the "2 faced" mayor?)
I think we're going to paint his face, so that half is normal and the other is crazy. (Or he's getting a mask, I'm not sure which).
But I get a break away arm! :)(Unfortunately, Dr. Finklestein has to hit himself over the head with it...because we don't have fancy special effects to make it do that itself).
The set will be quite neat, from what I've heard so far. We're going to have two castles (both 5 ft tall) on either side of the stage (Jack's house and Dr. Finklestein's house). In the Dr. F castle, there's going to be a contraption that will allow me to sneak in and out so that I go underneath and climb through the floor. There's going to be a graveyard too, as well as audience interaction.

My college did a stage production of NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. It was the other campus, but I went to see it anyway. It was fun, but not very good. When Oogie died, he did so off stage and threw gummy worms at the audience.
Where in New Hampshire? If it's near my parents' house and I'm not overloaded with homework that weekend, I might come check it out.
Side note: LOVING your avatar. I adore CATS DON'T DANCE. "Big and loooouuuud!"
Promise you will post pics,PM! I would love to see a stage version of this!!
btw, Sally's Song is my favorite.
Will do, clever name. I'll probably bring along my camera once we get the sets up and will probably try to snap a few pictures during dress rehearsal. (Sally really isn't around much, I've noticed).

That song was actually stuck in my head the other day!
I know a few other theatres/schools have done Nightmare, but i've never seen them. I've always thought it's one of those things that can either excel or fail miserably. (Hopefully, this production won't be the latter).
It'll be at the Sad Cafe in Plaistow, which is pretty easy to get to.

My parents actually live in Massachusetts, but pretty close to the Nashua/Salem area. How far is it from there?
As long as you don't throw gummy worms at the audience when Oogie dies. That was just ridiculous.
Hm. From that area, it shouldn't be too far, especially if you're going on 495.
I don't know how we're doing Oogie's death but here's hoping it doesn't involve gummy worms. D: (I seriously can't imagine how ridiculous that must have been. But I have faith ours is going to be good, as my director has worked tirelessly to translate the film to the stage as best as possible).

Didn't Emerson do this too? Lots of black lights, right?

How about a double layered costume that he only wears towards the end & have the top layer only lightly velcroed.
You would make a perfect Sally! OMG, I wish I could see you!
How are you guys going to tackle Jack's design?
Something akin to the Disney parks version?
Not sure, but I hope they'll be like that. The cast is required to do 2 hours minimum of tech work and I volunteered my services for costumes...so hopefully I can help put together some neat costume designs and what not.

I think so. One of my friends goes to Emerson, I'll have to ask him.
I think I may try looking up other productions online to see what they've done and to get an idea of what it looks like onstage. (That's kind of the sucky thing about being in the show is that I don't get to see what it looks like! :P)

Hey guys! Not sure if anyone's interested, but here's some pictures from the production (mostly from dress rehearsal although the last one is from the last night). It was a fun show, and a difficult thing to put together but we did it somehow! It's always amazing to see how a show fits together, especially during tech week.

Loved the movie as a kid though I never quite got into the Hot Topic renaissance that the movie had in my tween/teen years.
PM, judging by the photos it really looks like you guys made the best of it. With proper funding the spectacle of recreating the art direction of the film to the stage could definitely make such a show a hit.

Those pictures look great.
Thank you.

We really did.
There were some things we obviously couldn't do - like having a flower that bursts into flames during Sally's "dream". But we were able to create a dream-like sequence by using dance and lighting.

It really was. And the best thing is that these kids were so welcoming. I'd never done a show with them before and now I'm going to be back helping them for their other shows.
There's also some videos from the show, too.
