So apparetnly the New York City Council passed a non-binding resolution against the word n*. Wonder when they'll get around to wasting time with a non-binding resolution on the word Fag.
New York's resolution is not binding and merely calls on residents to stop using the slur. Leaders of the nation's largest city also hope to set an example.

Others argue that use of the word by blacks is empowering, that reclaiming a slur and giving it a new meaning takes away its punch. Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx, for example, said he would not stop using the word, and did not see anything inappropriate about blacks using it within their own circles.

Our theatre just did August Wilson's TWO TRAINS RUNNING, in which the word is used over fifty times. is the NT City Council suggesting Mr. Wilson's plays be censored, or not performed at all?
The City Council needs to find better things to do
It is a dog & pony show & will not be worth the paper it is written on. Commendable in theory but .....
No its not even commendable in theory, it borders on censorship. I mean, yes its non binding so its fruitless, but its one step away from limiting free speech.
So, does this just go only against the white people that say "the word" or black people, too?

Wake me if they get to BINDING resolutions, especially if it leads to public flogging.

This is what happens when Democrats and RINO Bloomberg are in charge. Government tries to control every minute detail of life.
Add this to the list of:
restaurant ban on trans fat
no smoking in bars
I'm a Republican because I don't like government controlling my life.
A small town near where I grew up recently tried this to no avail.
What was humorous was to hear the white opponents of the measure so carefully measure their words as to not appear racist (even though a good deal of them obviously were).
Pre-emptive caveat: I'm not talking about anyone on this thread or board. I'm referring to the sizeable contingent in rural, southern towns who, from my experience, still quite enjoy using the word for its original intent.

Restaurants banning trans fat and the the ban against smoking in bars is the government SAVING our lives, not CONTROLLING our lives.
Yeah, and when the GOP stops putting it in their platform that they want to jail or execute people for their sex lives, we'll talk.
eta: oh, and Marilyn Musgrave, Tom Tancredo and Jim Inhofe have called for jail and/or execution for non-violent sex crimes not involving children. I read it in "Vogue."

Um . . . well, I don't usually get into discussions such as this but right now the Bush administration (republican) is controlling our lives. The "Patriot Act" alone goes completely against the constitution and takes a lot of our rights away. Their are bad people on both sides, and I am neither republican or democrat because of it.
I was atching State Fair last weekend and they used the word "niggardly" exactly as it was intended. To describe a person who is cheap. There was no reference to color, in fact there aren't any African Americans in the movie at all.

No it is not saving our lives. People who make poor diet choices and who smoke are still going to do it. Limiting where it is done doesn't change that.
yeah, and when the gop stops putting it in their platform that they want to jail or execute people for their sex lives, we'll talk.
cal, i'd love to see this language from a recent national gop party platform. could you be a dear and link to it? specifically the clauses relating to jail or execution for sex crimes not related to children. thanks.

I agree. That's why I'm against drug legistlation, too. People should be able to make their own decisions about what they put in their bodies.

The Patriot Act was put into place because of a terrorist attack on the U.S. I think it's fine to debate the points of it and make adjustments. But we can understand why it was done. The banning of words serves no purpose other than the liberal need to control everyone and to put everyone into victimization categories.
Not national, papa -- but on the state levels. I know the Texas GOP at least has it on their platform that they want sodomy laws on the books (along with banning gay adoption, foster parenting and what have you). What would be the punishment for those laws, of course, will depend on if you're talking to George Bush or Roy Moore.
I think the city council is right!
People shouldn't run around saying, "Nincompoopypants" to each other.
I for one am glad they banned it.
Won't people just use another word instead that will take on the same meaning? It's not the word, it's the attitude that needs to be changed.

Besty - you're such a liberal tool.
oh, ok, cal. well, since this is a ny law, i'm sure there's a plank in the ny gop platform that you can cite that specifically calls for jail or execution for sex crimes not related to children. right?
So is it still okay to use the words kike, polack, wop, spic, etc?
For the record, I'm not in favor of non-binding (or binding, for that matter) resolutions against words, no matter how repulsive or loaded they are.
My response was more to the general statement:
I'm a Republican because I don't like government controlling my life.
Republican. Not "New York Republican." Just Republican.
