Here is John Bolton's opinion, which is that it's a
win/win for North Korea.

"Maybe Obama will follow his lead and do something now."
The unanimous opinion among the pundits is that this was completely orchestrated diplomatically before Clinton ever got on a plane.

Jordan, Obama is doing plenty.
He's spending billions of dollars like a trust fund baby on a shopping spree.
He's eloquently expressing the need for gay rights with fingers secretly crossed behind his back.
And in what little spare time he does have is spent knocking back some brewskis with a couple guys who, as Colin Powell said, need adult supervision.
Clinton/Clinton '12!

All the articles I've read say, "The White House had no comment."
How the eff can the White House have no comment?

I know we haven't seen any diplomacy in the last eight years, so I guess it may take a while to recognize it again. Do folks really think Bill Clinton just hopped on a plane and negotiated their release? Sure, his involvement was critical, and it should not be downplayed. I think once these journalists are back on American soil, we'll begin to find out more details of how this was all orchestrated.

From the Times article:
===
the initiative was cloaked in secrecy and came after weeks of back-channel talks between the United States and North Korea through its United Nations mission. In addition to Mr. Gore, the White House?s list of potential candidates included Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico.
North Korea signaled its desire to have Mr. Clinton act as a special envoy in conversations with Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee, who relayed that message to their families in the middle of July, according to a senior administration official. The message was passed to Mr. Gore, who contacted the White House, which then explored whether such a mission would be successful.
Mr. Obama did not speak directly with Mr. Clinton before the mission. But his national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones, contacted the former president to sound him out.
