I just wrote a letter to Stephen Sondheim. Wanna read it?
Mr. Sondheim;
I would like to begin this letter by telling you that I am a huge fan of your work. Your music has affected me like nothing else. With each listen, more layers are revealed, and I am in constant awe of how your lyrics compliment your music and vice-versa. My favorite score of yours is (of course) Sweeney Todd, but all of your scores are wonderful. I have also had the pleasure to be in a few productions of Into the Woods, and even if some aspects of the production were far from perfect, the music always remained brilliant, and all who were involved had an amazing experience.
This past summer, I was able to see the Broadway production of Assassins. It was a great show, and it is disappointing that the extended run could not have been finished. More people should have gotten the chance to see something that would make them think and discuss. The performers were excellent, and I was fortunate enought to see it with all of the original cast members. That day was June 6th, the day of the Tonys, and it just shows how dedicated the cast members were. Studio 54 was a very good home for the show, and having the orchestra so close made quite a difference.
Pacific Overtures is opening soon, and I am eagerly awaiting it. I have tickets for the second preview on November 13. It is sure to be a beautiful production. Pacific Overtures' score is a very under-appreciated, and deserves more recognition. Chrysanthemum Tea, Someone in a Tree, Pretty Lady, and especially Please Hello are great.
Company was the first score of yours that I ever listened to, and it is still one of the best. In ten years, I'm sure the lyrics will speak to me in ways I can't understand right now. And of course, having Elaine Stritch singing "The Ladies Who Lunch" is always a plus.
I have the DVD's of Into the Woods, Sweeney, Sunday in the Park with George, and Passion, and on the commentary tracks in the latter two, you and your other commentators always have such interesting things to say about the show, and they're very informative. The Sunday track especially, with James Lapine, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, and yourself, provides some great insight.
I have a few questions for you, and I would be very thankful if you could answer them for me.
1) Out of your scores, which affects you the most emotionally?
2) How do you feel about the La Cage/Sunday Tony incident in 1984?
3) Which song have you cut from a show that you would most like to put back in?
4) Who is your favorite collaborator?
5) And finally, what do you think your next project might be? One of my friends wrote to you about a musical about the office of the Presidency, two different centuries for the two acts, and you said that Mr. Lapine and you had been thinking of something along those lines.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I will always be a big fan of yours. Keep writing!
From a 13-year old fan,
My Name (It says my actual name in the letter)
Gov- It doesn't matter. If you say or type "phantom", I will burst into song. Every time. And nice job!
Gov'na, you're so eloquent and thoughtful it's just crazy.
Thanks. I'm very excited. I've never written a fan letter before.
I've only ever written two fan letters. One I wrote just last month and got a reply nine days later (*SQUEE!*) and the other I wrote years and years ago and would rather that letter stay in the past. If you would care to know, I wrote my very first fan letter to Regis Philbin. Yes, Regis. *shame* And Goddamn him, he didn't write back.
