I loved the campaign commercials. My parents loved the whole thing, but in their eyes Jon Stewart can do no wrong.
I also particularly enjoyed the western film montage

Posted: 3/6/06 at 12:07amI thought it was much better than last year. I like Jon Stewart and the campaign ads. Also enjoyed the "gay" cowboy flim clips. I'm not sure if Resse should've gotten Best Actress, I thought her performance was great and she deserved the nomination but I'm not sure about winning the award.

Meh. I'm upset, but I can't say it was a big surprise. The Academy, despite accusations from the fundies, isn't exactly the most progressive body of voters.
Case in point: tonight, Ang Lee becomes the first non-white person to win Best Director. (And he should have won it years ago.)

John Stewart was a GREAT host, but the actual awards this year were extremely, extremely disappointing. Not necessarily surprising, but disappointing.
Whoever voted "Hard out Here for a Pimp" best song obviously had never even listened to it.

I loved the montages....Maybe they were a bit too much (or too many of them) but they were all awesome, especially the western one.
I was SO disappointed Felicity Huffman didn't win. Can't even begin to describe how much I think she deserved it. In general, I thought all the acting wins were very safe - which was unfortunate. They also avoided controversy by not awarding the Oscar to "Paradise Now" - which I'm still not sure how I feel about. However - when they decided not to play it safe and not give Dolly Parton her much deserved Oscar, I got very annoyed. I mean....come ON.
I loved the honorary Oscar presentation and Robert Altman's speech, as well. Thought it was terrific and meaningful and he truly deserved it.
Oh and I thought John Stewart was lovely and funny and I loved him.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 12:16amI'm just so increadibly happy that Philip Seymour Hoffman won. I told my parents I was going to throw things if he didn't. Glad it didn't come to that. It was easily one of the most brilliant performances of all time, imho.

He was amazing, but I thought Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger gave deeper performances. I was bummed.
I can't believe Dolly Parton and Felicity Huffman didn't win. It's really, really a shame. I almost started crying when Felicity didn't win.

Jon Stewart was funny, but he didn't seem to participate in the ceremony as much as other hosts have done in previous years, to me. I especially loved the crack about Bjork's dress and Cheney.
Oh, and I loved Reese's dress and whole appearance. She looked beautiful.

Best reaction shots of the night:
1. George Clooney after one of the short film winners thanked the Academy for seating her next to him at the nominees luncheon. If you taped/TIVOed it, watch it again! I was cracking up.
2. Steven Spielberg during Ben Stiller's presentation of Best Visual Effects. When Ben was wearing the green suit, he said something like, "This is blowing Steven Spielberg's mind right now," and they cut to Spielberg and you could see him mouth, "No it isn't." LOL!
Fun times.
As for Jon Stewart as host, I think he is a brilliant and smart comedian, but as Oscar host he just didn't cut it for me. I'm just a sucker for Billy Crystal and his whole big opening.

I was happy with nearly every winner, especially Hoffman and Reese.
And, while I agree that 'It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp' wasn't the best song nominated, it was kind of fun to watch them win. They were the most excited people there.

There was no one "big winner" - Crash, Brokeback, Geisha and Kong each won three awards.
Best Song is a joke category. Where was "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" from Hichhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"?

I thought Jon Stewart lacked charisma. He had some funny lines but on the whole I wasn't impressed. The beginning sequence with all the former hosts kind of reminded me of the past Tony awards when Billy Crystal pretended he was hosting.
Also, what was up with Lauren Bacall? I was so uncomfortable when she was doing her presentation. It didn't seem to be a teleprompter problem and she even looked liked she was shaking.
I also didn't like that they played music faintly in the background the moment people started their acceptance speeches.

I posted this on the other thread as well:
I thought the entire show was a snoozefest.
There was no energy in the room. It was like a hollywood funeral inside the Kodak. And how many times did the academy need to show montages and script things to forcefeed the notion that "movies are important" (not just entertainment). The whole "serious" tone brought everything "down". Very few of the speeches were even filled with joy. And while I like Jon Stewart - he was out of his element. When the hightlight/most energetic part of the evening is Dolly Parton singing - you're in trouble. And if Meryl/Lily weren't on - the evening would have been a complete waste. My opinion anyway.

what happened to the winners of best adapted screenplay for "Brokeback Mountain"? The woman was like attending a funeral. The man was a nerd wearing jeans.

The writers are often my favorites- they ARE nerds wearing jeans, Not big Hollywood stars. (Except Clooney, and other like him.
)That makes them far more interesting.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 9:57amI love how they have a special ceremony for the technical awards and try to make up for the fact by having a hot, young starlet host. As if that's supposed to make up for the fact that they're too nerdy to get invited to the REAL Oscars.

Reese looked so pretty. I want that dress! But I was sad that Felicity didn't win, though both gave great performances she was definitely my pick.
I also loved the montages.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 10:05amGood point, Pengers. Would you trade a dinner with Rachel McAdams and hundreds of your nerdiest friends for a seat in the Kodak Theatre and the chance to actually be recognized internationally for your achievemnts?

Me, or them.
I would be having more than dinner with Rachel. So, as Joey would say, the point is "moo."

Posted: 3/6/06 at 10:09amLet us just remember that the Academy does not award films based on the social content, but on the quality of the film. Just because Brokeback didn't win, they aren't saying that homophobia isn't important.
