PJ,
The POTUS did indeed serve them a heaping slice of humble pie but it was to be expected amongst his former peers where there's at least an air of collegiality. It's when he has to respond off the cuff to John and Jane Q Public in town hall settings that he sometimes misses the mark.
I do give that man credit though for not speaking to his colleagues and the American public as if we were idiots. I couldn't imagine his predecessor making a quip about a "Bolshevik plot" ever.
The following blurbs really stood out to me:
"I couldn't find credible economists who would back up the claims that you made". -- priceless!
"I am not an idealogue..." Translation: "but your simple azzez are", LOL.
"Well, we can have a longer debate on the budgetary issues..." -- Good dodge!
"The challenge I would have for you as a Freshman..." -- that was a beat down of someone trying to appear the smartest kid in class.

See, this is why I hate politics. A lot of these questions include the blame game about Democrats and the President himself. On the flip side, if it was a Republican President talking to a room full of Democrats, they would be doing the same thing. Instead of saying it's this person and this person's fault, acknowledge that both Republicans AND Democrats run the government so they ALL have their hands in both the good and the bad. I feel like I am watching two kids try to convince the parent which one is the "bad kid."
Ps. Obama looks aged a good deal since his campaign run.

Sadly, it does seem that I'm forced sometimes to choose the lesser to two evils.

Unfortunately, that is the realism of government. But, instead of having to choose the "lesser evil," they need to stop doing the blame game bullcrap and ACT like one Government. I know that may be revolutionary but come on *sarcasm ends*

Why, why, WHY did he wait a year to do it?
During that year, he escalated a war, shat on the gays, sold out the progressive movement to the banks and insurance companies, and watched as the economy did the rest.
If he had been doing this all along, he would have had us all cheering.
Why wait till now?

The thing is Spider, a Republican WOULD never do this. In fact they COULD never do this. People say "both parties are the same" but it's dead wrong. Republicans worship stupidity. There is not a single Republican leader who could have fielded these type of questions without embarrassing himself.

Posted: 1/30/10 at 8:19amI believe this has happened in the past, but what sets this apart is that it was televised. Can't recall where, but I think I read that Bush did meet with the Dem caucus once.
#15Obama Finally Beats GOP at Their Own Game
Posted: 1/30/10 at 8:31amI think it would be a brilliant move by Obama to have a similar, public Q&A session with the Dem caucus. If he were shown to be just as frank with them, it would give his credibility a tremendous boost. And there's plenty of improvement needed on both sides of the aisle.

Posted: 1/30/10 at 3:00pmBush attempted something like this (Speaking to the opposing congressional delegation) shortly after his election in 2001 but it was cut short by his team when he quickly became obviously frustrated and testy by some of the questions. And of course, he would not allow it to be broadcast, live or otherwise. It was to be "off the record."

And Judas, I can see Ron Paul attempting something like this, but I can't see him staying focused long enough to make his points. And your other names (Huckabee and Gingrich especially) are great at the Rush Limbaugh style oration where they toss up clay pigeons and knock 'em down but both are horrible at actually answering questions and citing facts.
I have no doubt we'll see a few folk attempt this sort of thing. It will be most entertaining to see how it turns out.

The man was a law professor. If he participated at all the bastardized form of inquiry law schools call the Socratic method, he's an old hand at answering questions while controlling discussion.
Someone called this Obama's "Let Bartlet be Bartlet" moment. I'm not sure it'll that transformative anywhere but in our liberal minds, but here's hoping.

I'd venture to say that there were many lawyers in that room, so he was matching wits with others who probably have similar experience.
With respect to 'leveral minds', much of what was discussed was that the GOP was voting against and mischaracterizing much of his agenda as liberal, when in reality it was anything but.

At this point, I'll take transformative only in our liberal minds.
Ya gotta start somewhere.

MB - I think this was Obama at his best. Law School graduate is not the same as a Harvard Law grad.
Few of them went to Harvard and none were President of the Harvard Law Review. I went to a pretty good law school, and was one of the titled editors of its Law Review and I can tell you that it cannot compare in terms of prestige or accomplishments to being not only a Harvard Graduate - but President of the Law Review.
Four sitting Supreme Court Justices were editors (not President) of the Harvard Law Review. It is like the Mensa of the Mensa.
Obama as President of the HLR.

John McCain can barely string a coherent sentence together. Plus, his memory is really bad these days.
Also, did anyone notice how the Republicans kept taking offense to being called "the party of no ideas." I thought they were called "the party of no."
As for this changing liberal minds, I guess it will depend on what Obama does next. If he continues to reach out to a brick wall and continues to alienate the base that elected him then I don't think many liberal minds are going to be changed.

Yeh, when he makes mistakes and gets corrected, he blows a gasket. I don't think he could keep his composure that long. And, he does not have a great command of the issues like Obama.
Ron Paul could probably do it, but in the process, reveal some of the crazy-train that colors some of his views (I like some of what he stands for, but just shake my head at the other stuff).
Newt has not met a fact he has over-stated or skewed.
Huckabee probably has the temperment, but I doubt the same grasp of the issues. Pawlenty (of old) probably could do it. In his current incarnation, probably not.
