It's an interesting situation- the president can only ask. Congress can say yes or no. I can't find any record of Congress turning down such a request. Anyone else recall such a case?

Resignation? Really? I saw a car this morning with a bumper sticker that read IMPEACH OBAMA. I just shake my head. Bush and Cheney are war criminals and you ask Obama haters why he should resign or be impeached and they can't give you an honest legitimate answer. November 2008. That sounds about right. Tea Party protested on January 20th, 2009 because they did not like the way Obama was running the country.Where was the Tea Party during the Bush years? What is odd to me is that Obama really was a "unifier" here in Illinois. As a state senator and a US Senator he was the one democrat everyone liked and Republicans would openly praise. He was always leading a bipartisan this-or-that and coming up with compromise solutions. The same exact people that would talk about him being a "great guy" suddenly were ripping into him for being a commie or socialist or whatever. And nobody- nobody!- ever questioned his citizenship.

When in doubt, play the old race card. It never fails. Forget his record. It is all about his race. What a shock - not.

If he did a good job great. If he does a crappy job claim the same people who put him into office are now all racists & it is all GWB'S fault. Imagine old George W in office with $ 4 buck a gallon gas & almost double digit unemployment. The dems would be all over him . FDR came in on the heels of a depression & performed . Something tells me he would have gotten blame had he failed. Obama fails & it is all racism. Pardon me while I gag.

Honestly, this feels really over dramatic and unecessary. I mean haven't they been working on this since before the budget deadline?
Everyone knows what they have to compromise to get passage.

This is all about public perception, and it could go either way.

He's either the reasonable moderate who is willing to rise above partisan politics to protect the nation or he's the exasperated parent who can't control his kids and has to resort to shaming them.

Either way though Phyl is right. This won't change anything. Maybe they'll extend the payroll rate reduction, which does nothing for business because the reduction is only on the employee's portion. It does put a little more money on people's hands though.

Its not really "playing" the race card when its the truth. Face it, Obama would not be facing nearly any of the heat he is getting from the left if he was white and his name was John Smith or some other common Christian name like that. I would understand if they started buckling down on him at least a few months into his presidency, but the fact that a majority of the Tea Party faves were shouting "IMPEACH OBAMA" literally days after he took over the Presidency is quite stupid. And do not get me started on the fact that they all called his citizenship into question. Again...if he was white...that would not have even entered any ones mind.

Interesting you mentioned FDR- he too was attacked, vilified and smeared. He was repeatedly called a communist, a socialist, un-american and accused of violating the constitution. He was called "Franklin Delano Rosenberg" and accused of being secretly JEWISH. The more things change....

Obama's strategy is being referred to by insiders as "the only grownup in the room" and he is deliberately provoking childish outbursts from GOP leaders in order to be able to paint himself as reasonable, cooperative and adult against their absurdly childish and irrational behavior. I worry that a huge chunk of America seems to want tantrums and screaming.

There are times when you want/need the president to be the adult in the room, and there are times when you want/need the president to be a strong, imposing leader. We haven't seen enough of the latter. Despite the fact that he has been about as centrist as a president could be, the media allows the GOP to paint him as an extreme liberal. Part of the problem is that the public allows the GOP to cloak themselves in Fox 'News', almost never being challenged by a real journalist.
