I'm in eighth grade and I live in a more liberal suburb of Chicago. We will be watching the speech tomorrow. To my knowledge, no parent has complained about seeing the speech in school. We watched the inauguration and there were no complaints. I see no reason why a speech from the president about staying in school shouldn't be shown in school.

Infuriatingly, my school district isn't showing it. Unless the teachers have some sort of written activity that connects the speech to the curriculum in their classes. And even then, they have to allow students to opt out of seeing it.

I really, honestly do think that it's contrary to the conservative agenda to inspire all students to succeed. They fear nothing more than an educated populace and a level playing field for all people, regardless of race or income.

We will not be airing it. It is the first day of school and the timing is not good. It will be taped and teachers can show it IF it fits in with thier curriculum. Mind you: about 90% of our incoming Freshman class WENT to the Inauguration of Obama as a SCHOOL TRIP. And then the opposite side of this: My HS is fraught with controversy over since we assigned Obama's first memoir ABOUT HIS CHILDHOOD/YOUNG ADULTHOOD as a summer reading book. (Dreams of My Father)

Why is it wrong to LEARN about the current President of the United States? WHY is it wrong for him to wish them a great school year and encourage them to stay in school and do their best????

Sometimes: I just hate people.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

"Except the whole "scary black man" image."

That made me laugh...

I visited with two teachers this weekend- both said they had received TONS of calls about this- almost all demanding their kids not be exposed to this. One district is taping it and THEN deciding (Which means no- they won't show it days later, what would be the point) and one is letting classes that will be studying issues directly related watch it- but kids can opt out.

It really is a testimony to the power of the Right Wing that they have managed to make this "Controversial". It makes me sad for our country that we've devolved into a moronocracy.

I really have lost all faith in this country.

Rep. Senator Lamar Alexander came out in support of the video. This is all a bunch of bull.

This actually builds my faith in the country. A whole generation of children are seeing beyond their parents' fear and distrust.

Even if Obama's "post-partisan America" is not achieved during his presidency, it may still be his legacy.

When even Gingrich is calling shenanigans on this stuff, you know that the GOP is losing control of the party and its message (or, has already lost control).

Any party that would please the base would be unelectable to the general population (on a national scale).

"A whole generation of children are seeing beyond their parents' fear and distrust."

Are they going to see it? Not if their parents have anything to say about it.

Then what?

We will start another generation of entitled, spoiled, self-indulged kids.

I can't help but note the irony of people fearing Obama will spread the socialist agenda in public schools.

Tragically, this education speech debacle should the final wake-up call to the mealy-mouthed "Why can't we all get along?" Democratic Party: nothing this man does will be met with anything less than a frontal assault from the right wing. They have one goal: to destroy his presidency and invalidate him, his message and any and all plans. Period. Until that is fully accepted, the party in power cannot make any headway, and will be rendered weak and impotant. FDR went on ahead, and Obama must, too.

I'm with you Auggie. You can't be bi-partisan when the other party is nuts.

Obama may have lost health care and Van Jones, but he won the speech debate.

Maybe that means he's finally figuring out how to out-maneuver the opposition.

If President Obama made a speech saying "Murder and rape are bad things", the Rethugs would find a way to object to it.

"At the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world," Obama said. "And none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities."

"What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country," Obama says. "What you're learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future."

Clearly this is a message that children shouldn't hear(said sarcasticaly)...what is wrong with people? When I was in school Pres Regan made a speech about drugs...no one said anything...what is the big deal...I agree if the other side is nuts you can't be bipartisan.

Yes. The left wing's agenda totally prevented Bush from accomplishing anything. Like the Patriot Act, the vote to go to war in Iraq, No Child Left Behind...

After Eight, are you a troll or were you merely frozen in carbonite since 2001?

It was a veritable love-fest for George W. Bush from the left!

Because every other thing that came out of his mouth was ridiculous.

I never said they loved him, but it is a blatant lie to claim that literally everything Bush attempted was met with an assault from the left.
