Wooo I'm back from drum major camp! Hot dog. It was a shame there was no GregCam while I was there. It's been like...two weeks now because of my silly friends who think I want to hang out with them more than watch the GregCam.....:)
Oh and durn I've got a callback for a show on Wednesday night. How depressing.
Happy 3 month anniversary Love Thread!
Oh and I absolutely love that banner o' gregness.
Welcome back! And, I wouldn't call a callback for a show depressing! What show is it for?
Charlotte's Web...its a children's theater in Delaware I do a lot of things at. Sadly there aren't many parts for teenagers, only adults and little kids. In last years show my big acting debut was as a chicken. I'll probably be another farm animal chorus member in this one.
Do we have any pictures of your performance as a chicken? Children's shows are fun. Charlotte's Web makes me cry like a little girl. lol
Sadly, I do have some pictures of me as a chicken. Though there are some redeeming things to being a chicken with a solo. For instance, on the last day of the show I was so angry with myself because my voice cracked, but everyone just thought I was squacking like a chicken. Upgrade. Then again, my costume....i can't even describe it. It looked like someone threw up and made a dress out of it. And the worst part was when I put it on for the first dress rehearsal, our ancient director who's like....157 turned around and said "oh its lovely to see that dress in use, that was one of mine!"
I'll have to go dig up some chicken pictures.
Yay for chicken pictures! lol

"love is my legs..."
Well Ali to get backstage I suggest a large cash payment slipped under the stagedoor...the key is they only like 1 dollar bills, many scholars hypthesize this is too support their budding M&M/ jelly been addicition!
hahah Catherine is my favorite.
logainne, congrats on the callback! that is DEFINATELY a good reason for missing the greg cam! lol.
and don't worry, i was a catterpillar/butterfly in last year's children's theater production (we wrote a play based on the children's book, "Charlie the Caterpillar"), and well, the wings of my costume were red with black spots. and during the Q and A session, one of the lil kids raised their hand, and said, "red butterflies with black spots are poisonous" i was so shocked! lol, but it was SO MUCH FUN. children are awesome!
and you're drum major for ur marching band? woah, that is SO COOL! what group are you guys? and what association do you compete in? My band's group 4 this year (we grew!) and we do USSBA stuff, and i THINK that we're gonna do some BOA competitions, as well.
and, cat! u weren't supposed to tell anybody that!
Ok I'm going to have to ask, what is a drum major?...somehow I missed drum major camp in my youth
"To support their budding M&M/ jelly been addicition!" That is quite funny.
Catherine! You bad girl. You promised you wouldn't tell. Now everybody knows how Dre and I are getting to go back. It was supposed to be our little secret.
Welcome back Logainne. When you left and never returned, I thought maybe we scared you away, but I'm glad that wasen't the case.
Backstage DRS was pretty damn fun. Good luck!
Hehe no Broadway people could scare me away....I'm usually on the side of the person who DOES the scaring away...anyway.
To answer BluCat's question, the drum major (sometimes there called field conductor depending on the school) is the student who conducts the marching band and usually leads rehearsals and whatnot. They the leaders of the band and wear special fancy uniforms.
And movieinmymind--Actually I'm not drum major this upcoming year, I wasn't interested when they had the auditions and suddenly I was like " I want to be a drum major!!" which was really suprising to everyone because last year I moped around during band camp and hated it. So I went to drum major camp and learned how completely awesome it would be to be drum major, so I'm going to audition at the end of this upcoming year, and if I get it (hopefully) I'll be drum major as a junior. (I'm a sophomore now) Our band...doesn't really compete. As far as I know. Sometimes we go to competitions but since I hated marching band last year I was sly and snuck out of those extra band things. Hehe.
AAAND. I got backstage at DRS. Woooo. It was because my cousin is a graphic artist and she's done some work for John Lithgow's personal CD covers. So she and John are pretty close, and she contacted him and he told us we could go backstage. Sadly, some things never quite cleared and it seemed like we were complete liars. It was quite sad. Imagine a completely clueless father, a mother arguing with good ol' Kevin the stage door manager, and two girls holding playbills and cameras like..crying their eyes out because Kevin was telling them they couldn't go backstage. Finally it came through...someone remembered we were coming and we were let back. Sadly, Norbert wasn't at that performance, and Sherie had already left. The good thing was, that was when my obsession with Greg started. I met him backstage and ran home and got on the Greg love thread. We also got to talk to John a bit, who was insanely nice.
It was also rather funny...I post on another DRS message board, and I kept asking people "what is it like backstage? Who do you talk to to get backstage?" And everyone said "go find Kevin! oooh silly Kevin" So my mom...who is overly friendly....went around asking everyone for Kevin, and we ended up meeting like...four other really nice Kevin's and getting into conversations with them, and then we met the real Kevin, who was rather nasty to us. Buuuut yeah.
Next post: chicken pictures.

Wahoo! It's Goo! I love you, Goo!
Which thing? In the FAQ or the other thread?
A standby is usually called in an emergency/last minute situations. That's why they don't have as much prep time and why they have to be in a certain distance from the theatre. Kristy Cates, for example, stays inside the theatre until Ana finishes The Wizard and I, but afterwards, she has to stay in a 5-block radius of the theatre. But there are times that the standby will take over completely for a certain period of time.
27. Standby? Understudy? What the h-?
This can be quite confusing, but easy to understand once you sort of grasp it.
The STANDBY is the first to cover the role when the main performer is out. The standby doesn't perform every night in the ensemble. They're only assigned to the role they're performing. They are required to stay within a close proximity of the theatre, in case of emergencies. Standbys are paid their weekly dues as well as "extra" for performances, but obviously, not as much as the main performer.
If the standby isn't able to make it, the UNDERSTUDY (who normally performs in the ensemble) covers the role.
The SWING covers the UNDERSTUDY's role while they're covering the main role. A swing is a sort of understudy for the all the members of the ensemble. They have to know all of the "tracks" in the ensemble (separated by gender -- there are usually separate male and female swings) and will go on when an individual chorus member is out for whatever reason.
For example, look at a show like Chicago. In the opening "All That Jazz", Velma sings the number surrounded by a dozen chorus members. Each chorus member has his/her own individual steps and movements and blocking to do in that number (that's different from the other members of the ensemble) -- this is called a "track." If a male member of the ensemble is out sick, a male swing will step in to that "track" for him, doing all of his specific blocking and dancing in that number. That swing will know all of the individual choreography for every male dancer in the show (and know exactly where on stage an individual dancer is at all times), so he can step in for any male dancer at any time. The female swings know the individual choreography of all of the female chorus members.
Swing can also refer to understudies for multiple roles in dance heavy shows where the ensemble members also have lines and songs. In "A Chorus Line" a single male understudy/swing would cover the parts of Al, Don, Mike, and Mark and a female swing would cover Val, Bebe, Judy et al......
Thanks Margo!
So. Let's put it into example.
Shoshana Bean is sick, and cannot perform as Elphaba.
Her standby, Saycon Sengbloh, is called in, however, she is unable to perform as well. So the role goes to Shoshana's understudy: Brandi. Brandi is normally in the ensemble, so a swing is called in to cover her role in the ensemble.
If a standby is on vacation/sick/unable to perform, THEN the understudy is called in. An understudy might seem to go on more often because people might just call standbys an understudy. Or they might go on more often, but a standby is first in line to perform the role. Make sense?
Me and Cat's word(s) of the day!
Varietized and instrict!
Varietized - Adjective form of "variety"
Example: Your food choice is not very varietized.
Instrict - Verb. To implement and/or enforce something
Example: Today the school instricted a new rule.
For the record...she left out the good part of the sentence!
I demand to know the good part.
