Ouiser- I do not see plays, because I can nap at home for free. And I don't see movies 'cause they're trash, and they got nothin' but naked people in 'em! And I don't read books, 'cause if they're any good, they're gonna make 'em into a miniseries.

re: Oh Annelle, lighten up

how's your nephew? what's his name again?

Would that it were so, Beaverhausen. Simon sounds sensible. However, i've heard some authors take out stipulations in contracting (Albee, the Beckett estate, even Sondheim in reference to COMPANY) that controls casting as far as gender. Maybe Harling has come round, i haven't researched it. But i swear i recall some attempts being shut down legally. i think there is no universal rule about it, but that each licenser has their own stipulations.

Would love to see your SWEET CHARITY however.

re: Oh Annelle, lighten up

I always get tickled when I see non-southerners talking about STEEL MAGNOLIAS -- or for that matter, CRIMES OF THE HEART. What non-southerners don't know is that all the characters in those two plays are so ON-POINT, so EXACT, etc. Baby, those aren't caricatures at ALL -- there are people like that in every southern town. I know women (and men, in the case of CRIMES) that ARE those people. My mother, for example, is "M'Lynn" -- no doubt about it.

I'll never forget the first time I saw STEEL at the Lucille Lortel. Within the first two minutes of the play, I sat there with my mouth open -- they had it so right, even down to the hair and the costuming. It was strange, being so far removed from the south in the middle of the Village, and to sit there and watch that show. It remains a favorite memory of mine.

The cadence of southern is a form unto its own. I remember seeing an interview with Annie Potts, talking about doing Designing Women. Potts is from Franklin, KY, as you know. Anyway, she said she leaped at the chance to do the series because, after doing a bunch of movies where she played weirdos and such, it was such a relief to get back to her roots. She said she knew instinctively how to do a joke, or dialogue, "southern".

Okay, enough lecture. I'll stop.

I have to agree...while I am without question a New Yorker from stem to stern, when my mother got married to my stepfather when i was a kid, we moved to Georgia and I lived there for several years. It's *amazing* how dead on the SM girls are...that really is just about every Southern woman. (And I, for one, am glad...lovely ladies, all of 'em!)

Speaking of, is anybody else MADLY in love with Food Network's Paula Deen?
Suzanne: I never use catalogs. I'd rather go in the store and see all the salespeople groveling and sucking up to you. Julia: Pardon me, I never knew they were so solicitous at the K-Mart.

Shamrock, can I borrow a few of these back issues of Southern Hair?

...I doubt it. She got hit in the head.

Oh, Lord -- I almost threw in a reference to Paula Deen in my post, but thought it might be too obscure. I absolutely love her show -- I even Tivo it just for the entertainment value. That, my dears, is true "southern cookin'".

"That makes m'pie hole real happy"

I bet it does, Paula...I bet it does.

I tape her show, own all her books, and have two letters from her, and will probably end up going to Savannah to meet her by year's end.

(And you thought people got obsessed with Idina...HAH!)

didn't discover Paula Deen until this past Xmas when i was home from work and skimming through daytime TV. She is a combination of all my female relatives one generation up. How can i not love her? and her family even has some hotties of indeterminate sexuality...another very Southern thing.

have you guys heard of that group GRITS? Girls Raised In The South?!?!? you would love them.

I know! Of all the brilliant, gorgeous turns of phrase in that movie, THAT'S the one that had to enter the popular lexicon?

"It is, so I serve it with ice cream to cut the sweetness."

My sisters actually tried the Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa recipe. I didn't really work that well.

You guys don't need any rehearsals...you can all just pick a part and go up on stage and do the play. You're all good to go! LOL!

M'Lynn: Her colors are pink and pink!

Shelby: My colors are blush and bashful. I've picked two shades of pink. One is much deeper than the other...
