I am a proud gay man (unfortunately) living in Ohio. I have been with my partner for 7 years now, and we know that there is a true commitment between us, even if State Law now says it does not exist.
But I am extremely upset by this. It is now State Law that we do not have the same legal rights as any other Ohioan. However, since we are "single", and most homosexuals do not have children, we certainly pay much higher State & Federal taxes than heterosexuals since we can't legally claim our "families" as deductions. We are funding public schoools, state welfare programs, police & fire units, etc more than our heterosexual counterparts, but we do not have the same legal rights that they do. We are paying 1st class taxes to be treated as 2nd class citizens. This is an outrage and is opening the door for more hatred, bigotry, and hate crimes. I will certainly look to re-locate to another state where I feel safer and protected under law, but until then I will REFUSE to pay my state taxes.

Not ONLY did Ohio pass the ban (as some other states did) but they went FAR to the right of even the Bush camp, in stating that the partners will not be allowed to make health care decisions, inherit property etc (thereby taking away even the rights of the hetero couples who would have had common law rights on their side in a legal battle before yesterday).
The EVANGELICALS have once again decided to throw religion at the constitution.

Posted: 11/3/04 at 9:42amI had no idea how far-reaching the gay marriage ban is, Sam, particularly about inheriting property, etc. The mean-spiritedness of the Evangelical movement is a travesty of authentic Christianity. I work for a very liberal Christian church and we have had our share of threats because we perform same-sex unions, and are inclusive. The Evangelical movement is the Christian version of the Taliban. Very disturbing to witness its political power.
