Thank goodness for the student board. Anyway, I need to find an audition song for Les Miz (School Edition). Now, I know to completely avoid Wicked or RENT, but is Beauty and the Beast okay? If it's not, I need some suggestions. Any help at all is very much appreciated!!
what part would you be auditioning for?
^exactly what I was going to ask...
What part do you want? What's your range and voice type...?
Eponine, Cosette, Mrs. Thenardier, Fantine??
That's basically all the parts... there is also Young Cosette who gets a song and then of course the rest of the Ensemble and there are prostitutes, beggars, etc.
I'm guessing you want to be either Eponine or Cosette and depending on voice type and what you look like, go for whcih best suits you. Cosette is a very high singing role, Eponine is much lower and is more of a belting role too. If you don't really want as much of a singing role, there is Thenadiers wife and that is more of character acting. Fantine, well lookwise, you'd want a bit of a mature look (it's a mother) and vocally it's not super super high or super low either, it's more moderate.
You need to say what specifically you want and what you can do vocally, otherwise noone can help you.
16 bars? 32 bars? Full song? What's your voice part? What part(s) are you looking for?
I've done 2 productions of Les Miz, I used a 32 bar segment of 'Shouldn't I Be Less in Love With You' from I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change since I was really looking for any part. For call backs I had to sing Bring Him Home (E to E octave jump with a high A, yikes!). A lot of the girls who auditioned were singing things like Cabaret (from Cabaret) and an assortment of songs from shows like Miss Saigon, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Jekyll & Hyde.

Whoa, whoops. Sorry I'm late. I was thinking of Eponine and/or Gavroche. And I sort of have a lower belting voice, rather then a high voice.
well, gavroche, is a boy... so dunno if you should try for that.
Eponine seems more logical, what is your range?
Since there are tons of songs out there, just some you might not be right for your voice.
I know nothing about miss Saigon, but Lea Salonga was Kim in it and Eponine in Les Mis so maybe one of Kim's songs?
Two songs you might want to take a look at form Miss Saigon:
I Still Believe
and I'd Give My Life For You
It's the same composeres behind Les Miz but this is a little more contemporary. Both songs can have the belting quality that Eponine needs particularly I Still Believe.
Also you can take a look at 'I Know the Truth' from Aida, 'Stranger to the Rain' and 'Sailor of the Skies' from Children of Eden, 'Holding Out for a Hero' from Footloose, 'Someone Like You' from Jekyll and Hyde, 'As Long as He Needs Me' form Oliver, 'Come to Your Senses' from Tick Tick Boom, and 'The Wizard and I' from Wicked.
A lot of those in that list have good 16-bar and 32-bar segments that you can use; If you're going with a small segment try to use the most climactic moment of the song.
I would agree that if you're going for Eponine definately something slightly more "belty" if you will...but -not- pop. Les Mis is not a pop show...it's much more of a "classical" show...don't know any other way to phrase that...I think Miss Saigon would be a good choice...even maybe "I Know The Truth"...-nothing- from Wicked. I would read (if you haven't already) the "Girls Stop Singing From Wicked/Millie" thread...good insight/advice there.
You could do....I don't know. Umm I don't Know How To Love him, but with a classical touch, like not riffy? It can come off as classical if you do it right.
i'm also trying out for les mis school edition... sorry to change the subject, but do you have any ideas for songs for someone thinking maybe cosette?
Cosette...maybe If I Loved You from Carousel. Look for a Soprano song, very legit.
i think beauty and the beast is fine for this show. you probably shouldnt sing from the show unless they tell you to. For a lower belt Fantine is good to be (that's why I'm dying to be her because my normal break is around an Eb above middle C, but i can belt up to a G), so if it's possible try out with something that shows off your lower chest voice but also your higher voice. Disney songs are good on most occasions. No Wicked, no pop songs, a ballad would be good I suppose.
Also, Cossette has higher songs so make sure to show off your higher register forgetregret!
