re: On The Street Where You Live

It's one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE romantic ballads, Shira.

I saw the 20th Anniversary Revival of MY FAIR LADY in 1976 and was totally captivated!
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."

re: On The Street Where You Live

But Mary - you left out the verse! I have a copy of the music and it starts like this:

Darling, there's the tree you run to when it starts to rain -
See the way it's filled with bloom
And isn't that a garland all around your window pane -
That could only be your room!
This street is but a garden and your door a garden gate
What a lovely place to wait...
I have often walked, etc;
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

re: On The Street Where You Live

I went to a recital this past Saturday and this guy just sang this song out like there was no tomorrow. Bagh. Lousy attempt, I'm sorry to say.
This is my signature.

redhot--I have never heard of that verse before!

Let me see if I can track it down using my trusty friend Google...
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."

re: On The Street Where You Live

Mary - I think it must have been cut from the show - but it is printed on some sheet music - I sang it for a competition once and won! (back when I was young and fiesty!)

Swedish, Anyone?: re: On The Street Where You Live

När hon sa att hennes tant bet av en slev
Steg hon rätt i hjärtat in

re: On The Street Where You Live

Aha!

I found THIS introductory verse:

When she mentioned how her aunt bit off the spoon,
She completely done me in

And my heart went on a journey to the moon,
When she told about her father and the gin

And I never saw a more enchanting farce
Than that moment when she shouted
"move your bloomin' "....
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."

re: On The Street Where You Live

...why don't I just TELL you why this song is grammartically incorrect?

Residents of the U.K. would NEVER say "ON The Street Where You Live."

They WOULD say "IN The Street Where You Live."
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."
#20

re: On The Street Where You Live

re: On The Street Where You Live

Well, B.G., that's what Alan Jay Lerner said in his autobio, On The Street Where I Live...

I'll see if I can dig up any more info on this... (perhaps it was true for Britishers in 1912 and not so true for Britishers today...)
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."

re: On The Street Where You Live

Aha!:

"Anyway. A while ago I posted that I didn't know why "On the Street Where You Live" was wrong. I even asked a certain person why it was wrong using a certain internet chatting device. And no one has yet answered me.

Please, please, please, from the bottom of my uneducated seventeen year old heart, why should it be "In the Street Where You Live"???

All right. Happy Sunday.

re: On The Street Where You Live

Lolita, my love:

I believe that, although we Americans say "I live on Kimmel Street", the Brits say "I live in L'Avenue Guy Haines." And Freddy Eynsford-Hill is, presumably, British.

Just as, when Sweeney Todd says, "Well, you never know if it's going to run", he should have said, "Well, you never know if it's going to stand."
