Upon leaving the theatre tonight, I saw on the ABC news ticker that there is a school district in Oregon that is now allowing teachers to carry guns in the classrooms. A totally bad idea if you ask me. The link is to the article and the video from ABC. The first one is about the aforementioned district in Oregon, the other video that follows it is one about a district in Utah.
Because this is a smart idea
Only time will tell, but I know I won't carry a gun, nor will I teach in a room that has a gun.
A bit extreme if you ask me. There's a fine line between practical reason and insanity.
No one asked you.
I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable if there was a gun in my classroom.
And I CERTAINLY wouldn't feel at ease if my kids were in there.
How long before the first kid is gunned down by a teacher in one of those states ... only to find the student was carrying a cap gun and just went a little wild one day?
It will happen, followed by a "trial of the century." The teacher will go free for self defense or standing ground, and a stupid, unarmed kid will be dead.
We've turned into such a scared little nation.
Sometimes I can get behind the idea of Teachers wanting to arm themselves and the kids in case of an emergency, but then I read stories like this:

Or when the first kid (or invader) gets that teacher's gun away from them. It's only inviting trouble.
Bad idea Bad idea Bad idea
I would never allow one of my kids in a classroom, or even a school, where teachers were allowed to carry guns. Not even in college.
I can't get past this Mars/Venus schism in this country regarding guns. People see tragedies and react that the solution is either more guns or fewer guns, and since the two groups can seem to even comprehend the other's point of view, no discussion is taking place.
Both my brother and a very good family friend are educators. He is a high school teacher here in NYC and she works in a school in Maryland. They both agree, that if something like this ever happened to them and their school. They would throw in the towel and retire right away.
