I can't believe people are saying Johnny Depp's performance in the first Pirates movie was phoned in! What are you people thinking???
He was almost fired from the film (on a daily basis during the shoot) because of the "risk" he was taking approaching the role that way. Everyone was freaking out because he was crossing the line of what would be acceptable as a pirate (channeling the physicality of Judy Garland, anyone?) in a Disney movie.
It was one of the most daring "leaps" I've seen any actor take on film in the past decade. And NONE of that is in the script. It was all brought out from Depp's imagination.
And his performance as Jack is the reason this film was such a hit. He MADE that movie with the sink-or-swim chances he decided to take in the role.
He should have WON the Oscar for it.

Depp can do anything.
Re: Keisha Castle-Hughes. I liked her, but would have preferred a nomination go to Sarah or little Emma Bolger for In America (my favorite movie that year). I was in awe of both of those children!
Keener, actually, is really quite, quite wonderful in, of all things, THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN. No joke. It's the kind of performance that gets no attention or credit. So oddly enough, I bought her CAPOTE nod, because it was in the same year (Keaton's ANNIE HALL Oscar was in the year of GOODBAR, an inferior film, yes, but it demonstrated her range.)

I can't believe GLADIATOR (!!!!!!!) won Best Picture in a year that also saw the releases of the two greatest drug films ever made: TRAFFIC and REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.

Cuba Gooding, Jr in Jerry Maguire. Regina King deserved one over him. Edward Norton was robbed.
Ben Affleck not getting a nomination for Good Will Hunting, but Minnie Driver getting one for that film.
Julia Roberts in Erin Brokevich. Sorry, she'll never be a serious actress to me.
John Hannah not getting one for Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Kristin Scott Thomas for English Patient. Her face never moves.

I still cannot believe that Muppet Treasure Island was so ignored at awards season. That truly was one of the most affecting and brilliant films of the year.

LOL! I feel the same about "The Muppets Take Manhattan"!
All the major awards that Titanic won.
I hope you don't count Best Visual Effects and Art Direction in that, because it totally deserved those.
I'm really surprised that some of you guys thought that Gooding Jr. wasn't deserving of a nomination for Jerry Maguire. Sure, Norton deserved the award, but I thought Gooding was fantastic.

I agree with EVERYTHING you said about Depp's work. It was an inspired, risky performance that worked like a charm.
