Actor - Supporting
Will Win: Heath Ledger
My Personal Choice to Win: Heath Ledger
Actress - Supporting
Will Win: Viola Davis
My Personal Choice to Win: Kate Winslet. Im aware she isnt nominated but I felt they should have continued with the trend of her being supporting (with a double nom for rev. road) and then her and streep getting oscars.
Now your turn everyone! Hoping to spark a discussion.

Will post mine later, but I just wanted to say that of all the brilliant turns (in pretty damn fantastic movies) that Winslet has given and been nominated for, I can't believe that it will be THIS movie that the Academy feels the need to award. It just isn't that great of a film, and while she does a good job, it's not remotely near to her performances in LITTLE CHILDREN, ETERNAL SUNSHINE, or even IRIS.
Saw THE WRESTLER tonight, Mickey Rourke is fantastic but I thought Marisa Tomei gave her best performance since MY COUSIN VINNY. If it weren't such a strong year for supporting female roles, she'd win.

Best Picture
Will Win: Slumdog Millionaire
My Personal Choice to Win: If either Slumdog Millionaire or Milk take it, I'll be happy, though I'd probably cheer louder for Milk based on personal reasons.
Best Director
Will Win: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
My Personal Choice to Win: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Actor - Leading
Will Win: Mickey Rourke
My Personal Choice to Win: Sean Penn (although I haven't seen The Wrestler, unfortunately)
Actress - Leading
Will Win: Kate Winslet
My Choice: Kate Winslet (I'm not entirely sure that hers was the strongest performance this year. I had very mixed feelings about the movie, and even about her performance, but it's definitely up there with my other picks for the best performances of the year, and in a coin toss the sheer overdue-ness tips it her way.)
Actor - Supporting
My Prediction: Heath Ledger
My Choice: Heath Ledger
Actress - Supporting
My Prediction: Penelope Cruz
My Choice: Viola Davis

Posted: 2/19/09 at 12:52pmI haven't seen all the nominees yet, but I have seen "Rachel Getting Married," and quite enjoyed Anne Hathaway's performance. I seem to remember her being an early favorite. Could Streep and Winslet split the vote, allowing Hathaway to sneak in?

Slumdog will sweep all the awards. In the categories it wasn't nominated in, a write-in campaign has been organized.
Including best animated short and best documentary.

Unfortunately, it's Slumdog's prize to lose for movie and director. I haven't seen all the nominees, but Benjamin Button was a FAR better film as far as I'm concerned (as was Dark Knight and Wall-E).
Actor: Rourke
Actress: Streep (Haven't seen the Winslet movies, but my understanding is she's in the wrong category here)
Supp. Actor: Ledger (not even a hint of a doubt of a question)
Supp. Actress: Cruz

I just watched MILK again, having finally gotten to my screener of WRESTLER, and I still think Penn will be robbed if Rourke gets it. In many ways, this is Penn's finest work on screen ever, surpassing DEAD MAN and his win, MYSTIC RIVER. I am always baffled by the SAG awards going to an entirely different actor than the Oscar, since the WGA/academy line-up is much more of a match. I guess the actors in the Academy tend to be a more rarified slice. If Penn has won the SAG, doesn't he still have a good shot? Yet everyone is convinced, now, that the wind has blown to Rourke. I think the press has helped him. And he is effective in the role. But it should be Sean Penn's.

There's a lot of publicity attached to Mickey Rourke, the guy has charisma to spare and it's exactly the kind of story Hollywood eats up: "poor washed-up guy makes a great comeback and wins the Oscar." Just like Heath Ledger win is inevitable because of the publicity circus the media has attached to it, Rourke might ride the media wave right into the Oscars. Having said that, Sean Penn's performance is one I consider to be transcendental, it's larger than life, it's powerful, uplifting and tragic in ways that Rourke's performance is not. I think Penn will win, but Rourke could easily take it too.

"Just rewatch MILK -- it's about as good as acting gets."
I couldn't agree more.
I loved Milk. It was the best movie I saw last year. And, before I saw The Wrestler, I never thought I'd root for anyone but Penn to take home the Oscar. But Rourke's performance is the one that I still can't get out of my head.
I'll be happy for either one of them.
