Dark Horse: BENJAMIN BUTTON

Best Director
Will Win: Danny Boyle
My vote: Gus Van Sant
Dark Horse: David Fincher or Stephen Daldry

Best Actor
Will Win: Sean Penn
My vote: Sean Penn or Richard Jenkins (pure brilliance in THE VISITOR in the kind of understated performance like Julie Christie's in AWAY FROM HER last year)
Dark Horse: Mickey Rourke

Best Actress
Will Win: Kate Winslet
My vote: Meryl Streep
Dark Horse: Meryl Streep

Best Supporting Actor
Will Win: Heath Ledger
My vote: Heath Ledger (though Emile Hirsch from MILK is worthy of the award too IMO and he wasn't even nominated)

Best Supporting Actress
Will Win: Penelope Cruz
My vote: Marisa Tomei, Penelope Cruz, or Viola Davis, if I were a voter I'd watch each movie over and over again to make my decision. I think all ladies give equally brilliant performances.
Dark Horse: Amy Adams (she's young, she's an A-lister now, Oscars might wanna give her the award)

I wish I could understand the love for Penelope Cruz. She was very good in her role, but the role wasn't as flashy as I was hoping for. Viola Davis has approx. 12 mins of screen time and nails it right out of the park.

I have to say though that REVOLUTIONARY ROAD and THE WRESTLER deserved a lot more attention as films and not just for their performances.

Same here! I saw The Wrestler last night, and it was the only nominated film in the Best Picture and acting categories I hadn't seen. I'm now torn between Rourke and Penn.

I really, really, really hope Rourke wins. His performance was on the level of Charlize Theron in MONSTER or even Robert DeNiro in RAGING BULL. That rare performance that transcends "performance" and becomes "embodiment." He was just incredible and I don't understand why he's not a lock to win. Penn was fantastic but Rourke was simply incredible and I really hope he wins. It's a haunting, beautifully layered, and sometimes painfully real performance.

And I also hope Davis sneaks in and steals the Supporting Actress Oscar (which she very well might do). The acting in DOUBT was simply astounding and should be awarded in some capacity. I loved Cruz in BARCELONA but Davis made more of an impression on me in her one scene in DOUBT than all of the other nominees in her category. And she was on the screen for...what...ten minutes? Just a wonderful performance in a film with incomparable acting all around.
