I love popcorn movies, too, but as much as I enjoyed Enchanted or the Harry Potter films neither one is best picture material.

I forgot to mention that I think Sound Of Music and Oliver are two of the best films ever.

And I do believe there is a balance. How else would you explain films like Galdiator, total popcorn, (and yes, I hear Liz screaching the winner every time I think of that film) or Forrest Gump?

I'm almost NEVER happy with the Best Pic lineup--but I also don't like popcorn movies--I want to see something with some literary merit, and to be fair, sometimes the popcorn movies have that--but they are not created with the same goal in mind: BLOOD and NO COUNTRY were not filmed with audience aesthetics in mind.

It's the same reason TONY N' TINAS WEDDING and NAKED BOYS SINGING don't win boatloads of Obies....

All of these are Best Picture winners and nominees since 2000:

Juno (2008, $117 million)
The Departed (2007, $132 million)
Million Dollar Baby (2005, $100 million)
Seabiscuit (2004, $120 million)
All THREE Lord of the Rings movies (2002-2004, $300 million +)
Chicago (2003, $170 million)
A Beautiful Mind (2002, $170 million)
Gladiator (2001, $187 million)
Erin Brockovich (2001, $125 million)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2001, $128 million)
American Beauty (2000, $130 million)
The Sixth Sense (2000, $293 million)
The Green Mile (2000, $136 million)

It is ridiculous to say that the Academy doesn't nominate popular movies! In every year since 2000, except for 2006, at least one of the Best Picture nominees grossed over $100 million domestically. It was only a few years ago that the Academy nominated each of the Lord of the Rings films for Best Picture, probably the most popular series of films since Star Wars!

That's what I thought, Actr. It's the popular movies that are usually nominated and win. That's why I was pleased about No Country this year. Finally, an award for merit and not popcorn factor.

You liked Dr. Doolittle over the edginess of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

And Hello Dolly! over the ground-breaking Anne of the Thousand Days?

I think Besty's point makes a lot of sense. A balance would be great. That's why I loved it when Johnny Depp got nominated for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, why I love that Whoopi Goldberg and Marissa Tomei won for their brilliant comic turns in their respective films, why I'm thrilled that Meryl Streep got a nod for THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, and why I think JUNO (the only one of the five Best Picture nominated films that has the perfect balance between "show" and "business") should have taken the award home over that piece of muddled pretentiousness that the Coens offered.

It sounds like those who seek balance are mostly just pissed about this year.

BROKEBACK made almost $30 million more than CRASH
AVIATOR more than $2 million over MILLION DOLLAR
ROTK made almost $400 million...

You also need to consider the "kid factor"--movies used to be geared to the tastes of adults and now the family audience rules the box office.

7 of the top ten films last year were intended for the family audience.

Well, I personally can't stand the fact that CRASH won "Best" anything, or that MILLION DOLLAR BABY took home at least two undeserved prizes (best picture and best actress).

One last "bump" on this thread, because there is an interesting article in the LA Times about "what really needs to be done" to get today's TV audiences interested in the Oscars again.

It breezes over the little-seen choices of nominated films (which I keep harping on) as only one reason, and goes WAY beyond that to what, how, who, why, etc.

If all of these ideas were put into place, it sure would make a radically different show!

I am sure this has been touched on, but I think the real reason the ratings were so low is because the last two Oscar ceremonies have been incredibly dull and boring, and less to do with the type of movies that were nominated. Jon Stewart was a bore, and Ellen last year did not begin to match the brilliance of her hosting the Emmys.

And what the heck? It was the 80th Anniversary of the awards! Why were not many more legends of screen represented??? Iconic stars should have been presenters on some level--where were Robert Redford, Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Dustin Hoffman, Robert DeNiro, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, Julie Andrews and the like.... There were short video clips of Streisand and Sidney Poitier, but in scope of what the show should have been-too underwhelming. So poorly done....

While I'm all for changing the show, I have to take issue with your claim of "little-seen," best.

Do you mean little seen by AUDIENCES, which is actually the fault of the distributors--people can't see a film like LA VIE EN ROSE in Amarillo, Texas--believe me. There's just no audience for it to make a profit--and theatre owners make more money the longer a film plays in the theatre, so they want to book films with some degree of longevity and hopefully, repeat business.

If you mean little seen by the VOTERS, then they really have no excuse with the mailed screeners and the free movie tickets.

The show just needs to be written and directed by someone with a sense of both tradition and entertainment.

The Superbowl analogy is a bit faulty as well--enjoying the Superbowl is not dependent on seeing anything else--you can have a good time watching it because it is self-contained and people of any age can enjoy a game--kids aren't going to be able to either see or understand a TWBB--but cheering Eli demands nothing of the viewer.

The Superbowl has become an event that the Oscars, Emmys, Tonys, or Grammys could never hope to match--and it's not like TV and music lack for fans--nobody pitched a fit when Herbie Hancock beats much more popular musicians.

You're obviously not "getting" any of my posts, lildogs.

Think what you want. I'm tired of saying it, and it doesn't need translating or clarification. It's all there, just re-read it.

Or continue to "take issue," if you'd rather.

In general, award shows are dead or dying IMO. There is no reason to watch. Celebrities are overexposed on every level. It is no longer 1960, where people clamored around the TV for a glimpse of a favorite star. There is no need to watch anything because all of the best moments will be captured and shown to death on the internet and gab-fests like ET.

I mean, three hours red carpet before and and 2-3 hours of recap after on E! is enough to put anyone over the edge.

The media and the internet has killed anyone's desire to sit for several bloated hours for the hope of a glimpse of magic during an awards show.

Viewers and consumers are much smarter and savvy and TV needs to reinvent itself to stay current-4 hour broadcasts just dont work for anyone anymore.

Alot of that, Betty, comes from these 24-hour "news" channels--they probably have nothing else to air.

You can probably thank the OJ trial for it...
