I've always hated their organization. Now they have some explaining to do.
Here's the article

I hate PETA even before this.

I don't anything about this group but have heard of the name before and I wouldn't have expected them to do something like this judging from their name......

I'm probably the biggest proponent of animal rights you will ever meet, but I despise PETA. They're a low-level terrorist organization. I remember two years ago, they were here in Denver, giving out comic books entitled "Your Mommy KILLS ANIMALS!!" to kids whose mothers wore fur to performances of "The Nutcracker." That's a level of shameful I can't even begin to understand...

They sent flyers to my old middle school science program with pictures of dead animals and describing in detail how chickens are slaughtered.

A group of PETA members confronted my uncle and berated him until he was in tears because he's blind and makes use of a seeing eye dog. Nice work PETA.

They compared chicken farms to Nazi concentration camps. Way to endear yourselves to this Jew, assholes.

I've been a PETA member for a few years now, and while some of their actions give animal rights activists a bad name, the mission of the group as a whole is really to improve the way animals are treated. They raise the awareness of issues that the public wouldn't otherwise think about - and for that, I will continue to be a member, along with dozens of other groups.

I'm all for aniamls to be treated fairly, but PETA takes it too far.

I'm a vegan, and I'm confident that there is reason for this. I question people calling themselves "animal rights activists" but still eating meat. It is more like "selective animal activism."

Who has called themself an animal rights activist and still eats meat? No one on this board, I hope.

I wonder if these people were REALLY PETA supporters. Could be sabotage.

And, I think you can be deeply respectful for the care and treatment of animals and still eat meat, wear leather, etc.--it's the way of the Native Americans to use every part of the animal.

And newsflash, like it or not, our teeth make us omnivores (plants and meat) by nature. So, while I respect anyone's choice to not eat meat, please respect my right to eat meat.

:)

Grandin has been instrumental in changing the way cows are transported and slaughtered, making the process less frightening and painful for them. People eat these cows, in the end. Is she not an animal rights activist because she just makes the process of getting beef to eat not cruel?

No, I agree, Plum. I didn't think of it that way, but it's possible.

JRB, I think you're wrong. How can anyone be deeply respectful of animals, yet murder them for their own good when it's not even necessary? And no one on here dis-respected your right to eat meat...at all.

munk--I was making a general statement on the issue, not accusing anyone here of disrespecting.

But, how do you suggest one eats meat if they don't kill an animal to do so. It is most definitely necessary for some people to eat meat. And do you have a problem with animals who eat other animals?

Don't even get into the "animals who eat animals" thing. If I were a true animal rights activist, which I am, I would respect the animals instinctive nature to eat other animals. Denying them that would be cruelty. The same way I feed my dog meat. Until my dog can decide for herself that she wouldn't want to eat meat, I'm not going to make that decision for her.

How do I suggest that one eats meat if they don't kill an animal? I never suggested such a thing. How is it necessary for people to eat meat? Don't understand that.

We're omnivores by biology, munk. Meat provides people with essential nutrients that are quite difficult to get from other sources.

So, the only animals who shouldn't eat meat--are human animals?

According to EAT RIGHT 4 YOUR TYPE, most humans are historically and genetically designed to require meat to function properly. And, when I started eating meat again after being a vegetarian for a time, I felt so much healthier.

I'm so glad other people hate this group. I think their tactics are disgusting and undermine their cause.

I don't call myself an "activist"
But, I'm an animal lover and I have been since I can remember.

I have a friend who raises goats for food, but she gives them a good life first. While I could never imagine selling an aniaml to someone who I know will kill it after having it for about a year and forming an attatchment to it, I don't hold it against her. I just don't think I could do it, the same way I would never be able to train a service animal, because I would get too attatched it it.

Do you also think it's wrong for people to have pets, like rabbits and mice, that also live in the wild? I'm not trying to be sarcastic or mean, I'm genuinly interested... I know someone who thinks it's "immoral" to even have a puppy as a pet, but I think that's going too far. She also refers to what I feed my cat (Friskies Special Diet) as "cancer in a can".

My exposure to PETA has been a bad one... untill I took myself off the mailing list (I don't know how my name got on there in the first place), I used to get pictures of dead animals in the mail, and pictures of sick-looking cats in small cages... while I don't doubt that this is really happening, I don't like to see it. I would always go hug my cats after that. I think it's horrible that things ilke that happen, but I don't like it shoved down my throat.

You haven't lost my respect simply for belonging to PETA, and I know all members are not like the ones who sent me the letters and mailed my school the pictures.
