But when discussions like this happen, somebody INEVITABLY says to a vegetarian "I'm gonna go enjoy a honking helping of veal parmagian right now, yummmmmmmmmmm, I love eating those calves that have been chained in a stall and never saw the light of day, take that sucker, bwahahahahahaha!" or "Go eat a cow!"

There does seem to be an assumption that if you are vegetarian, it's for political reasons and that you are insulted by others eating meat. I was vegetarian for many years and used to get that from people. I worked at a small company for a while where there was myself, a vegetarian at the time, and a woman who was vegan. In planning a company hoilday party, I asked that they choose a restaraunt that had good alternative dishes for thsoe of us who did not eat meat. I was verbally attacked as though I had tried to convert all my co-workers to veganism. Frankly, I don't care what anyone eats.

Namo, you mentioned the militant activists of Act Up. Honestly, I felt the same about them that I do about PETA. The organization may have sincere and evry good goals but they tend to do thinsg that I think take away from their credibility and make them look like nuts. Act Up was the same way at times. The goals wa wonderful but they allowed the organizations events to be run by those who seemed to be more interested in attention than results.

I think PETA should protest the use of a cow - even a stuffed one - @ Spamalot. Every performance, they hurl a stuffed cow off a fortress. Supposed some deranged nutcase emulated that & hurled a real one off & than it started a fad

Nip this in the bud & put up a picket line around the Shubert until the producers remove the offending scene. No more cow hurling

Hey Justice, your message would be so much more effective if you would have this site open and available anytime you decide to post... http://dictionary.reference.com/

Again, unable to remember back three whole pages, or to READ the subsequent posts, resorts to childish, well, senile-ish whisking off in a totally non-sensical direction.

Orion, ACT UP really does illustrate my point because I do not believe there would be HALF the HIV treatments that are available today were it not of the old time ACT UP craziness who made the more mainstream treatment activists seem positively puppy-like, and puppies always get a place at the table.

My point is that both types of activism are needed, even if it would be crazy to agree with EVERY tactic that either type uses.

I have gotten in so many vegetarian fights its not even funny. Now I am a civil girl. If you are a vegetarian and we are eating together I will certainly not pick on you unless you give me just cause. I start getting pissed when pompous little jackasses start parading their diet around like a fashion statement and preach to me how I kill living creatures to eat their flesh. Yes, I know what I'm doing and I don't intend on slowing down. I'm going to eat meat and wear leather as much as a I want and there isn't anything anyone can tell me that will make me change my mind. What flack I get from the whining party is merely a pain in the ass, and only makes me think lower of their cause. I have no problem with vegetarians. I have a problem with vegetarians that annoy people to death with absurd facts about the environment to get them to convert to their "superior" lifestyle.

Do they put tofu on their heads like a hat? I can imagine that would be annoying at dinner. And messy.

CAUSE? It is just a diet. A diet. I think you're probably projecting. The way you wrote about your experience you make it sound as if you are regularly taunted by these big bad vegetarians. If you're exagerrating, fine. If not, well, it reflects more on the type of person you choose to hang out with than about any "cause."

Even if it's a cardiologist doing the telling?
