PSAT

Anyone else taking this terrible standerized test on Wednesday? I think I'm going to die of boredom while I'm taking it. Sadly, I know a lot of the vocab, not from studying but from Sondheim lyrics.

re: PSAT

take it seriously. i'm still buying beer and showtunes with scholarship cash from that thing. not sure if they still offer anything. I took it 5 years ago when my state somehow had a lot of extra education funds.

re: PSAT

I am taking it seriously but not compared to some of these crazy people in my class who have had a private tutor for two years and who piss me off by reciting their last 20 scores for the writing sections. I go to an intensified high school, where everyone wants to go to Harvard and started taking the SATs in fifth grade. IT IS ONLY A TEST!!! It's important but I don't want to spend $12,000 on a prep course like all my friends are doing then fail my classes because my weekends are occupied learning how to fill in bubbles. i feel that there is too muc dependence on testing. Standerdized tests are not an accurate portrayal of a student's potential. And I'm not saying this because I'm bitter, I'm a good test-taker but I HATE being pumped with fear about the PSAT. Okay, I'm going to stop ranting.

re: PSAT

they make you take a test to get into high school? or is that for a magnet or private school?

re: PSAT

Take it seriously, but don't stress too hard over it. After all, it doesn't count. It's just supposed to get you acclimated to taking that kind of test. And I agree about standardized testing being a stupid idea. I don't think colleges should base admission on your SAT scores.

Good luck though!

re: PSAT

Yeah I have to take it too...they made us take the actual SAT in 7th grade. Ugh. They're obssessed with making us "competitive" for Ivy League schools.

re: PSAT

ugh best of luck guys. prepare but don't stress if you don't get to everything you had wanted to study. being relaxed and alert during the test can mean everything.

re: PSAT

I just think it's really boring...I've always scored really well on standardized tests, so I'm not worried about that. At least I won't have any homework that night, right?

re: PSAT

We had to take the PSAT's twice. Once sophomore year, once junior year. And then I took t he SAT's twice. Definitely glad I'm done with standardized testing.

re: PSAT

if you can't study for it, don't worry. the kids who stress all year and go to expensive SAT summer camps (i know someone who did this) always seem to psyche themselves out in the long run. the psat doesn't really matter. and for the SAT, I just went into it with the mindset that there would be plenty of time to take it again, so there was no pressure. seemed to work. got me into a school with equal rank and selectivity figures to NYU, with my 2.8 HS GPA.

re: PSAT

What I never understood about the PSAT was how it had an extra writing section not on the actual SAT (this extra section was always my best, oddly). Does this still exist?
And yes, you can get scholarships off of it... but if you dont do well, I wouldnt stress. I think my actual SAT score was around 200 or so points higher than my PSAT. I honestly can't remember. Once you are past it, you tend to forget all the things that seemed so important in HS.

re: PSAT

There's no essay on this PSAT, but there IS one of the New SAT, so if you're a junior or younger the SAT will have an essay. i still have to write one on Wednesday even though it won't count so teachers can grade it to give us an idea of what our score would be like.

And yeah, sometimes you do have to take tests to get into high schools. My school is a govenors school (I have NO idea what that means) and so I had to take a test and fill out an application. It was worth it though, I love my school.

re: PSAT

Argg I'm a junior and I will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday as well. My school made us take it as sophmores, and I got a 1340, though I'm not sure how good that really is. I'm trying not to stress out over it too much, after Wednesday it'll all be over for the PSAT anyway.........

re: PSAT

I took it last year, and all I can tell you in terms of advice is to read really carefully. and to fill in bubbles carefully too. That's where they'll get you!

re: PSAT

I'm a Junior, and will be taking the SAT in November. I'm in a SAT Prep class right now, and I did well on my practice SAT so I'm not that worried about it. I'm just dreading the 3 hours that it will take.

re: PSAT

I had the opportunity to take the test this year--i'm a sophomore--but I missed that opportunity. (Didn't sign up in time). I don't see the big deal with them if you can't study, so I'm not freating it too much for next year.
