I wonder how the Log Cabin Republicans will justify this:

Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin says she supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, a break with John McCain who has said he believes states should be left to define what marriage is.

Why are people surprised about this? Of course Palin wants to amend the Constitution to forbid gay marriage. So does John McCain, don't think for a second that he doesn't.

And so would Barack Obama, and so would Joe Biden, and so would Hillary Clinton. Why pretend otherwise?

Goodness gracious jrby. Such vehemence. You're going to be very disappointed when Obama and Biden sell us all down the river. If they all oppose gay marriage, as they do, it is only a short step to put it in the Constitution. Don't fool yourself that they would think twice about doing exactly that if it became politically expedient.

For F**K's sake why can't they just let people marry who they want to marry? I know Sarah "tolerates 'them' with all her heart" but give it up!!! There's no turning back the hands of time...if there was I'd probably be a slave on a plantation under Palin's regime!!!

The last time the senate voted on such an amendment was 2006, when all three of the above-mentioned senators voted against even bringing the amendment up for consideration. 7 Republican senators also cast "no" votes, one of whom was John McCain.

It's very dangerous, and incorrect, to think that there is no practical difference between the stance of the Republican party and the Democratic party on this issue. Unfortunately, we are still in a place in the country today where a Democrat running for national office has to pay lip service to believing that marriage is only for heterosexuals, but with so many more pressing legislative priorities at the national level, it is only Republicans who make banning gay marriage a legislative priority (2006 was the last time they were in control of congress and able to propose the amendment).

Finally, it's worth pointing out that the president actually has no power to pass a constitutional amendment - indeed, Obama, Biden, and McCain have more power than the president on this issue as senators, and they all exercised it AGAINST such an amendment.
