"You need to lighten up, Namo! Domestic violence is hilarious when it's against someone you don't like!'
I hope that was a joke that went bad.
It's easy to laugh at this becasue Paris Hilton is so strongly disliked by so many and for good reason. However, domestic violence is never funny. Paris is a spoiled, vacant minded, useless person who could use a good bitch slap but, that is not reason to find comedy in her being beaten the way she was. There are any number of bad things that could happen to this woman that would cause me to laugh but not a beating from an
ex-boyfreind.
The attitude that some people "deserve it" is one of the reasons that domestic violence continues to be a problem. The victim usually feels that in some way they deserve to be hit and let it continue.

What I find deplorable is the immediate assumption that it was domestic violence, or even male/female violence. This particular victim has many people of both sexes who've tried to kick her ass in the past. Everyone is up in arms about "domestic violence" and "violence against women" in regards to a PARIS HILTON story! This isn't a beaten housewife, or a hate crime... it's a debutante that got in a cat fight.
What about a rich, spoiled b*tch that probably (she has a verifiable track record of this) ran her mouth to another rich, spoiled b*tch in the V.I.P. room? Is it still a big emotional issue if Shannon Doherty beat her ass? Or is there cause for a bit of humor?
I certainly agree the domestic violence isn't a "funny" issue...
Some people have a tendency to run center stage wailing and tearing at their hair at the drop of a hat. This is a hat drop story until proven otherwise.

I absolutely NEVER thought I'd hear myself say this, but...
Poor Paris. I actually kinda feel *bad* for the twit. She's not really a horrible person, she's just, you know...unbearably stupid and sort of shallow. Sweet, but shallow. She doesn't deserve to have the crap beaten out of her, no matter *how* annoyingly dense she is.
I *knew* I always hated Nick Carter for a reason.

It was a joke that went horribly wrong, Nina. The day I encourage domestic violence will be the day I grow a third arm.
Strangely, women have an inbelievable tendency to be catty about their fellow women, to the point of being downright chauvinist. I really hope whatever happened to Ms. Hilton gets taken care of. She doesn't deserve that kind of treatment.
If it's domestice violence. We really don't know a thing about it.

ckeaton, I may have read the article wrong but, it seemed that the beating came from her ex boyfriend which is a situation that one could still consider domestic violence, not a catfight. I hope there never coems a day when people stiop running center stage and wailing about domstic violence against any gender.
Plum, I thought so. I'm glad to hear you confirm that it was a tongue in cheek remark making fun of people who actually feel that way.

Posted: 8/6/04 at 10:16amIf it was Nick Carter who is responsible, then of course, no woman deserves to be beaten up by a man. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was another girl who beat her up. I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner.

Posted: 8/6/04 at 10:22amLet's see, she's had a scuffle with Shannon Doherty, supposedly had Lisa Marie Presley throw a drink or something or other at her because of Paris's flirting with Nicolas Cage. Does it not seem like she was going to have a girl beat the hell out of her sooner or later?

I understand what you are saying. There is a difference between drunken, bad behavior that results in a fight and domestic violence. I am going on the information available that she calims it was he ex. If it were that she was out partying and got into yet another fight with another woman, then it is her own fault and she deserves what she got.
There really is no gray area here. If a person of any gender beats on their partner of any gender, the person being beaten is a victim of domestic violence.
If a pesron goes out to a club, gets drunk and mouths off or does anything to start a fight, they are a participant in the violence and should know better.

Does this whole discussion remind anyone else of the old "but-she-was-asking-for-it" rape case defense?
Not okay.

Not at all.
If I am walking down the street and someone verbally harasses me, I am justified in knocking them to the pavement.
I've been a bouncer. People are jerks, especially angry drunks. Personally I don't think that violence ever accomplishes anything, but I refuse to have pity for someone that very literally "asks" for it. I've seen it too often.
Disclaimer: Paris Hilton and her reps have not indicated who perpetrated her beating, how or when... it's ALL speculation.

Posted: 8/6/04 at 1:49pmThat is one girl I would cheer to get bitchslapped. When I hear a formal accusation that it was Nick Carter, then I'll believe it. Is that really a trustworthy link that was posted?
#45re: Paris Hilton beaten up
Posted: 8/6/04 at 1:51pmNo it isn't trustworthy, because the last I heard, Hiton was not releasing the name of the perp. Carter is vehemently denying it, and she isn't pointing the finger.

Does it matter who did the beating, grabbing, hair pulling, bitchslapping, or any other form of violence? Are people not repulsed that it happened regardless of to whom? Does anyone honestly believe words or drug/alcohol consumption is a justification?
Or am I just out of touch expecting some form of civility?

Yep, etoile, you're out of touch. We both are.
I have to tell you, in my heart I hope that some of the posters here are a little more enlightened than they are letting on; that they are just young and nieve, and don't know how obnoxiously callous and ignorant they sound.
I would have hoped that thirty-five years later, feminism would be perceived as something a little deeper and more important that not shaving one's legs. But, as I said, we're both out of touch.
