Jane, it's hard to make permanent changes like that. I feel for you. But I wouldn't be afraid of the doctor. You may need meds to help you keep it under control. It's good that you're doing what you can. And you're human! You will cheat and eat "bad things" once in awhile. We all do.

I'm on a diet right now. I've lost 37 pounds so far. But I cheat (meaning I eat whatever the hell I want) twice a month. Then I go right back on my strict diet. It's not a binge, per se, but it is a blatant disregard for eating healthy. The point is that you can't make that a lifestyle. If you eat that way all the time, you'll kill yourself.

I'm also not one of these people who only advocates "portion control" as a way to keep the weight off. Three teaspoons of lard and nothing else won't make you gain weight. But you're still putting crap into your body instead of eating well. A balanced diet is the key. With moderate exercise, and even occasional cheating. That's being realistic.

Denial is deadly. And Paula is "living the dream."

But is anyone besides the author of the article Joe linked pretending that fat is the only problem with Paula's diet? The woman used two doughnuts as a hamburger bun. Leaving aside the fact that they're fried, there's just a weensy bit of sugar in those.

Thank you for those words Besty and wow, congrats on the 37 lbs. I mean, really wow.

Joe, of course I read the article. But every article you read is going to say something else. I can probably dig up several saying that being overweight definitely can lead to diabetes.

I'm going to follow what my dr. says. And I'm not one of those "the dr. knows" people. I happen to have one of the best drs. in NY, probably in the world. I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!

"But every article you read is going to say something else. I can probably dig up several saying that being overweight definitely can lead to diabetes."

EXACTLY my point. I've been on a round-robin of doctors for the last six months, each with his pet theories on what is "good" or "bad." Jimm Fixx (expert on running) and Euell Gibbons (expert on being healthy) both died earlier than Paula.

Something is going to kill you.

It's definitely not just fat, Reg. You're right. It's stuffing your body full of empty calories that offer little or no nutritional value. You can fill up on a wide variety of garbage. Fat and sugar being the worst. Sugar will turn to fat, if it's not burned off. Alcohol, too. It breaks down into sugars, which, if not burned off, will also turn to fat. That's why people gain weight when they drink more booze. (I'm guilty of that myself.)

The best test for me is how I feel and look (not from a vanity POV). When I eat badly, I can see it in my eyes, on my skin, my hair, not just the added weight. Everything is off. I break out. My hair gets lifeless and limp (sure, take a pill! change your hair products!).

When I eat right, my skin looks healthier, my hair looks better and shinier, and I lose weight.

I don't need to "read statistics" to feel the difference a healthy diet can give me.

I'm a professional dieter. I've struggled with my weight all my life. Sometimes I win, sometimes the cheesecake wins. I'm human.

I tried the Atkins Diet once, and it worked. I lost 40 pounds eating nothing but fat and protein. And my veins felt like they had syrup running through them. My skin and hair were bad ... but I had tricked my body in to fake ketosis. So the weight came off. It's the only time in my life when I lost weight and actually felt worse afterward.

I'm puzzled by the mystery that seems to prevail here. I realize that so many dietary tests are bogus, because there are too many variables involved. It's not just "feed the same thing to everybody and get the same results." It doesn't work that way because we're all predisposed to certain things genetically. Our "engines" operate differently as individuals. No test results, positive or negative, will ever be conclusive. That doesn't mean common sense shouldn't be used.

I don't know how anybody in their right mind can fill their bodies with junky crap, empty calories, sugar, and fat, and say it's perfectly okay. How could it be? You wouldn't treat your car that way by feeding it bad, worthless fuel. Why would you treat your own body that way?

Joe, your Euell Gibbons example is pointless. You might as well have used Jonathan Larson as the example, because they both died of the same thing. It had nothing to do with their diets. At all.

You could also use a guy who gets hit by a bus. He "died young," too. He should have gone ahead and had a fat sandwich made from two pieces of fat with fat inside.

OK then, Julia Child. She lived to be 90 something eating whatever she damn well pleased.

All anecdotal evidence is pointless. Goth's racist old granny who ate Crisco all day long and smoked Virginia Slims is irrelevant.

I don't see the controversy in believing that ANY diagnosis of an incurable disease should at least warrant a hard look at the choices you've made and/or continue to make.

Well, we can always cite exceptions, Joe. There are lots of people who live past 90 who smoke, drink, eat junk, etc. And there are also lots of people who eat healthy, exercise regularly, and have no existing health problems who one day just drop dead at a young age.

. But we aren't talking exceptions because odds are that we're not the exceptions. We're talking in generalities. I'll venture to say that generally, you are what you eat and generally, the dietary hazards we've been discussing are in fact, hazards. (to our health)

All anecdotal evidence- unless it backs up your beliefs. And any scientific evidence that doesn't. Can I be blamed for not understanding what isn't pointless?

Just so I know your point, Joe- Are you saying that you should eat whatever you want throughout your life because no one has proved that you personally will get a disease? I'm not trying to be funny, I'm just not sure what you're saying.

Sure. That is the point. And if you become famous, people will probably talk about it.

Anecdotal evidence shows me diet DOES effect the body, though. Whenever I'm vegetarian or vegetarian adjacent, my blood pressure and cholesterol drop pretty dramatically.

I guess I don't understand why you don't want us to talk about it, Joe. It's not like this is some secret that a tabloid unearthed. She went on the Today Show to announce it.

Joe is in denial.

Takes one to know one. I've been there myself many times. It's a rebellious denial, too. An "Oh, yeah? I'll show you who can't eat whatever they want!"

Omm-nomm-nomm-nommm-nommm...

That's the big cosmic joke. The "freedom" to eat whatever you want only "traps" you with major health issues in the end. It takes away all your freedom, because you weren't smart about it up front.

Totally and completely ironical, isn't it?

Under "serving suggestions" for that pie on Paula's page on the Food Network weibsite...

"Serving suggestions:

Drizzle caramel pecan topping with semisweet chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate.

Cook's Note: To add candied pecans to pie recipe, use 2 cups of candied pecans, 1 cup towards the bottom, 1/2 cup towards the middle, and 1/4 cup towards the top."

It's a rebellious denial, too. An "Oh, yeah? I'll show you who can't eat whatever they want!"

This is an absolute right on the money description of the attitude behind the mass food market in the US today. The combination of rugged American individualism and relatively inexpensive unhealthy food is what's gotten the country into the mess it's in.

I mean, right here on this board, Roxy and Goth have frequently gone on about "the nanny state" when somebody tries to have a discussion about nutritional value and health. Look how paragons of healthy living like Rush Limbaugh go after Michelle Obama for the organic garden!

I remember digging up that Paula Deen clip with the Krispy Kreme burger because I thought it was an urban legend, and whole demeanor was like, "Oooooh, aren't we baaaaad, y'all, but people who don't know how delicious this is are just fuddy duddies and busy bodies who want to control us and we SIMPLY won't allow them to, will we, y'all?"

Paula's hens have come home to roast, in a deep fryer and a sugar glaze. It's only natural she's parlayed her disease into a drug endorsement deal.

In case you are interested NAMO, many are fed up with the nanny state. Have all the discussions you want but when you start dictating what people can or cannot eat it goes too far.

All states are hypocritical re smoking. Oh it is so bad etc etc. Instead of banning it, they get tax dollars from it. They want people to stop but if they did they would have more budget gaps to fill. After smoking is outlawed, than lung cancer should vanish. No way you can get it by breathing in the noxious city air right?

"Right here on this board" Can you believe it?

According to Roxy's smoking analogy, that embarrassment of a pie pictured above should come with a $500 stupidity tax for eating it. Maybe that will help the medical industry cover expenses when they have to remove half a digestive tract or pay for ongoing meds because this patient "ate whatever the hell they wanted to in a free country."

This isn't about what is legal. It's not about minding the law or creating new ones to overly monitor people's reckless and thoughtless behavior.

It's the same argument I'm having with a few people now over Joe Paterno. They say, "he didn't break the law. He did what he was supposed to do and told his superiors. Why is he being raked across the coals for it now?"

It's not a legal issue. It's not about "the law" getting involved. This is about acting responsibly as adults, especially when the irresponsible choices made affect others. And yes, I believe people should take a lot of heat for it if they chose not to do the right thing.

Apparently Paula stopped the taping of an interview with Dr. Oz because he had the temerity to bring up the fact that she also has high blood pressure. It's probably safe to assume that's because she doesn't have an endorsement deal for bp medication? The poor thing's only getting $6 mil over two years for her diabetes drug shilling, why should she be expected to announce this too?
Don't make my blood pressure spike!
