Posted: 8/4/05 at 2:04pmActually, the worst are the ones who think they're apolitical and "bored" because they think THAT'S hip. (They're never really apolitical, they're conservatives who support the status quo.)

Posted: 8/4/05 at 2:25pmI hate people like that. How can you not care about politics?? And besides, if you don't vote, you have no right to complain about the state of things.

I ADORE the shirts that have a picture of Che and the words "I have no idea who this is" beneath.
Oh so pomo.

Posted: 8/4/05 at 2:38pmIt happens with libs too...you get the hippies who will tell you how they're all about peace and then you try to talk to them about the war in Iraq and they don't know anything about it. Except it's a war. And they're against it. Oy.

Posted: 8/4/05 at 3:35pmThe most disturbing product of this is the new Chairman Mao iconography that's suddenly become hip. People don't seem to know that he was a ruthless dictator who suppressed hundreds of millions of people, tortured intellectuals and destroyed centuries of culture. Yet suddenly his image appears on T-shirts because he's Communist and exotic. As a Chinese person with parents who survived China's Cultural Revolution, I find it a bit sickening.

Posted: 8/4/05 at 3:52pmre-Mao: i wonder if these people mistake it for '70's nostalgia? i read a great book over my vacation, "The Man Who Stayed Behind" the autobiography of Sidney Rittenberg ..he was the highest ranking westerner in the chinese communist party, mao's translator, and spent 16 years in solitary confinement in a chinese prison. you can see the revolutions idealistic beginnings and the descent into mania, paranoia and complete disfunction.

I totally agree with you, Blue Wizard. People don't understand what they're supporting when they tout that Mao t-shirts; but isn't communism cool?
Oy again.

Like people who criticize people's t-shirts when they don't realize their own country is being run by a man who lies, who is is drunk with power, who condones outing CIA operatives, and who is incompetent at battling terrorists?
Ever run over people like that?

"Don't you hate those people?"
Yeah, it's called COLLEGE. A good majority of the loudly political voices are either liberal because it's cool or conservative because they want to be different and anti-liberal. It's amazing, you get into a debate with these people, and they don't really know what they stand for, just that it's hip to support being pro-choice and anti-war; or that they stand out if they say they support the current administration and thus declare themselves conservatives just to draw attention to themselves.

Or you'll meet those middle schoolers and high schoolers who hate Bush because it's "hip" to hate him. For example, the kids who rely on juvenile insults rather than making a cohesive arguement against this divisive and controversial figure, saying things like "OMG! BU$H IS A fag0rZ! He STUPID!"

Posted: 8/4/05 at 8:23pmWell, kids usually believe what their parents believe. There were just as many kids who were ignant about Kerry. Or who blindly support Shrubya.
