re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Then you have seen some REALLY bad movies, Mistress.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

I like bad movies too, but no, I haven't seen that one. Thanks to robbiej, I discovered the unending joy of Shark Attack 3 over the weekend though.

Is he a worse actor than The Rock?

much. plus the story line is that mutant frogs have taken over the earth and hes a fertile man so he has to go save these seven women from the clutches of the frogs and impregnate them. on his journey hes accompanied by two women, and hes attached to an electrical thing that shocks him if he ever tries to 'waste' sperm. he falls in love with one of them.

Now I don't think I would go THAT far. And it is definitely a better film than Catwoman re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

ok well, I thought the biggest downfall to Van Helsing was that chick who was doing a horrible job acting. oh and I never did bother to look up the name of the guy who played dracula... he looked very familiar to me.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

If by that chick you mean Kate Beckinsale, then yes, she was uncharacteristically dreadful. And Dracula was Richard Roxburgh.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Here's my top ten...I'm putting my number one, then the rest in alphabetical order, because I don't really know what order I'd put them in...

1. Sideways
2. Closer
3. Eternal Sunshine...
4. Fahrenheit 9/11
5. Finding Neverland
6. Garden State
7. The Incredibles
8. Life Aquatic...
9. Motorcycle Diaries
10.Shrek II*

*I've yet to see Bad Education, The Sea Inside, Million Dollar Baby, Kinsey, Ray, Very Long Engagement, Hotel Rwanda, and Phantom (though from the trailers, I don't think Phantom's really going to knock my socks off) so I'm sure one of those would bump Shrek off the list. I did see The Aviator on Saturday. It did absolutely nothing for me, though I predict lots of screaming and swearing on my part throughout the awards season, as I predict it will likely clean up...sigh...
But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

Million Dollar Baby is better than Bad Education????????????????? I am seeing it this weekend so if it IS better than Bad Education, I will be in cinematic heaven.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

There's no comparison between Bad Education and Million Dollar Baby. Film clearly made by gay, Spanish, avant-garde director VS. film clearly made by old school, white, American, Republican. End of story.

I like Million Dollar Baby, but Bad Education's the one I'll buy on DVD.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Ironically, I'm more likely to buy Bad Education--I want to collect all of Almodovar's films. And it is apples and oranges. I may later realize that BE should be back in the #2 slot. But, I am coming off of the experience of M$B and it is saying with me strongly.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Beav, the UK is SO behind the times in movie releases. Friedmans was released in April of 2004 here. Vera Drake came out this weekend, I saw it on Friday and was knocked on my ass by it. LOVED it. Totally engrossing, utterly devastating. And Imelda Staunton will clean up at awards time. As for Kinsey, it doesn't open here until March 4th. Ugh.

That's what I keep hearing about Lynn Redgrave. And if Dame Judi can win an Oscar for 8 minutes of screen time.......

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

I thought Lynn Redgrave was great but the writing was more responsible for that scene's quality. The time for Bill Condon's widespread critical acclaim will come. It's inevitable.

And Supporting Actress? Should be Laura Linney's to lose. Eat dirt, Cate Blanchett! (actually, she was terrific too) I just hope that Virginia Madsen doesn't get it.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

I wouldn't have even minded if Linney never spoke during KINSEY - just looking at her facial expressions is enough to know exactly what she would have said - you can see everything in her eyes. she's so brilliant and deserves the oscar.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

As much as I love Cate Blanchett and would still applaud if she won, I'm hoping that the Academy feels a bit offended by her take on Hepburn and gives Laura Linney more #1 votes as a result. Currently, Kinsey isn't expected to win any Oscars, but I think that can and should change.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Although I enjoyed MILLION DOLLAR BABY slightly more than KINSEY, KINSEY clearly deserves the best picture award over that and anything else this year - especially THE AVIATOR. I'm just hoping Kinsey will be nominated, period. In a perfect world, these would be the nominees, IMO.

Kinsey
The Aviator
Million Dollar Baby
Sideways

For the 5th position, I would be happy with:

Finding Neverland
Farenheit 9/11
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Let's just hope The Passion of the Christ and Ray don't sneak in...

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Sadly, I think Ray and Finding Neverland will take the fourth and fifth spots.

My lineup would read:

1. Kinsey
2. The Aviator
3. Sideways
4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
5. Million Dollar Baby

But I'm seeing Hotel Rwanda Thursday (for free!) so I may change my mind. I do not think Kinsey will be nominated for Best Picture, btw, but that's obviously what we both want.
