Oh, I think you've got to rank Garden State above Open Water and The Dreamers. But at least it made your list...what is the matter with those Golden Globe people??

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

The 5th Element? Isn't that like 7 or 8 years old? Don't get me wrong, I love it as an original bit of Sci-fi.
OK, I don't even think I can come up with 10 films this year, so I'll go for top 5. And this is just from what I've seen this year.
1. Finding Neverland.
2. Garden State
3. The Incredibles
4. Fahrenheit 9/11
5. Spider Man 2

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Jon, Monster came out in the UK in April 2004, which is why I included it. Oldboy isn't released in the US until later in 2005 but I still included it here because it opened in the UK in 2004.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

I haven't really seen that many movies this year. The most recent one I've seen is Anchorman, which made me very sad for Will Ferrell. grr, did I spell his name right?
I'm still stuck in last year and the year before that... god, they had some great movies... *sigh*

PS. yay bw_bound! Kill Bill!

Oh yes, I almost forgot about that! Eternal Sunshine was absolutely wonderful.

Hey, does the Original Star Wars Trilogy count? It was rereleased on DVD this year. I mean, last year, if you know what I mean.

PopCultureBoy -- could you see your way to adding my personal pick (and only film I saw last year): The Princess Diaries II; A Royal Engagement?

Great choices all, the bottom 10 are REALLY spot on, CATWOMAN had less to offer than a snuff film!

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

No Eternal Sunshine? *sniffle*

Further proof that I have a lot of movies to catch up on. Oh, and that the theater owners in my area are tasteless.

Vera Drake really belongs on any top ten list. It was phenomenal. I'd also vote for Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Vera Drake doesn't open in the UK until Jan 7th 2005, so I will hopefully include it on next year's best of list.

As for Eternal Sunshine, well, I didn't like it. Loved the performances and the visuals, HATED the screenplay. I am no fan of Charlie Kaufmann anyway, as I didn't like Being John Malkovich and I flat out loathed Adaptation. But the great reviews and word of mouth on Eternal Sunshine made me think that this could be different. It wasn't.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

I'm glad people are recognizing BAD EDUACTION. Does BAD EDUCATION or THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES have any change at a best picture noninated at the Oscar's, or will they be immediately grouped into foreign?

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Unfortunately, they do not seem to stand a realistic chance of being nominated for Best Picture. And, I get that Bad Education is ineligible for Best Foreign Film as I think Spain submitted The Sea Inside--which is nominated for a Golden Globe. I could be wrong about this. Heck, Bad Education may even be ineligible this year for any awards for some reason.

Here is where the Best Picture race is thought to stand currently by 3 different Oscar buzz followers:

http://www.oscarwatch.com/ (these are in order with top being frontrunner; asteriks refer to major awards/nominations)
Million Dollar Baby**
The Aviator**
Sideways**
Finding Neverland**
Hotel Rwanda*
Ray**
Kinsey**
Closer*
Phantom of the Opera**
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind**
Collateral*
Fahrenheit 911
The Motorcycle Diaries
The Passion of the Christ
A Very Long Engagement

Another Oscarwatch.com pundit http://www.oscarwatch.com/Kris/oscarchart04.html (parenthetical info is change in place):
1 THE AVIATOR
2 MILLION DOLLAR BABY
3 SIDEWAYS (+3)
4 RAY (-1)
5 FINDING NEVERLAND (-1)
6 FAHRENHEIT 9/11 (+2)
7 HOTEL RWANDA (NEW)
8 THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (-2)
9 KINSEY (-2)
10 COLLATERAL

http://www.oscarcentral.com/2005/category/picture.html

1. The Aviator
2. Finding Neverland
3. Sideways
4. Ray
5. Kinsey
6. Closer
7. The Phantom of the Opera
8. Million Dollar Baby
9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I would conclude the following:

1. Million Dollar Baby
2. The Aviator
3. Sideways
4. Finding Neverland
5. Ray or Kinsey

BUT there are almost always 1 or 2 surprises!

Didn't see Napoleon Dynamite. Will rent it when it comes to DVD.

And Addy, what about Julie's singing in Princess Diaries II?
