re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Sadly, I think Ray and Finding Neverland will take the fourth and fifth spots.

My lineup would read:

1. Kinsey
2. The Aviator
3. Sideways
4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
5. Million Dollar Baby

But I'm seeing Hotel Rwanda Thursday (for free!) so I may change my mind. I do not think Kinsey will be nominated for Best Picture, btw, but that's obviously what we both want.

I wouldn't say "sadly" for FINDING NEVERLAND at all - I love it. If RAY is nominated for best picture over KINSEY, that will be a tragedy. RAY is an abomination compared to RAY, FARENHEIT 9/11, and even PHANTOM. I would love for 9/11 to be nominated. Did you watch the Critics Choice Awards tonight? I was shocked, but happy, when Swank won. Who won best supporting actress, I missed it!

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

Virginia Madsen won supporting actress tonight. Ugh.

And I wasn't thrilled with Hilary Swank's win either. She has played the tough girl enough times (now the Karate Kid is boxing?). She also completely flew under the radar after Boys Don't Cry and it wasn't because she wasn't getting offers.

The Academy Award for Best Lead Actress is owed to Kate Winslet for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. This will be her fourth nomination if she gets it. And oh, she'd surely cry for us if she won. Isn't that part of what Oscars are about for those of us who aren't screen stars? The satisfaction of seeing the winner emotionally satisfied, rather than calm and unsurprised as Jamie Foxx, Virginia Madsen and Alexander Payne will be if they win in their respective categories?

The only category in which I wouldn't mind Finding Neverland winning is Supporting Actor, but even then I'd be partial to Thomas Haden Church and Peter Sarsgaard. Morgan Freeman shouldn't win for playing another variation on the "Mystical Negro." If they're going to give him an Oscar, it should be for a role that's more respectful to him as a talented actor and an African-American. Directors and screenwriters can make him the center of a film if they want, but that's just it... they don't want to do that.

Virginia Madsen? Really? She was fine in Sideways, but I liked Sandra Oh better. And that's not even going into the Cate Blanchetts of the world.

Plum, Virginia Madsen has almost been SWEEPING these critics awards. Mark my words: There will be backlash. Critics are the Paul Giamatti character in Sideways. Oscar voters are the people the Paul Giamatti character wants to be.

I still believe that Blanchett deserves it. Madsen was great, but Blanchett was... stunning as Hepburn. I'm surprised there's no buzz on her yet.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

I was happy that Swank won because I loved the film so much - but her specific performance does not merit any sort of award, in my opinion. Nominations, certainly - but all the other actresses gave superior performance, I thought. I was also disappointed, but not surprised with Foxx's win. There is no doubt that he's excellent in the movie - no one would dispute that - but I would give the award to Leonardo DiCaprio or Johnny Depp. When will Johnny finally be recognized for his AMAZING, underrated acting? Was Laura Linney even nominated for a supportng actress tonight? If so, she should have won no doubt. I'm not sure how much tonight will mirror the Oscar's. This year is weird for me because the movies that won't win I have more of an emotional attachment to. Those that will win, or have won already, definitely deserved it. But THE AVIATOR for best score? No, no, no...

So Evelyn, you're saying that you think Kate should/will win the Oscar for SUNSHINE? I don't think Swank will win anymore, but I doubt Winslet will beat Staunton. I haven't seen VERA DRAKE, but I'm rooting for Winslet all the way.

Swank was great, and gave a faultless performance. However, I agree with you, Munkustrap. Staunton (who should have won), Bening, Thurman, and Moreno were superior. Winslet was good, too.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

I'm really upset that when I finally had the opportunity to see Vera Drake, it was already gone. It seemed to only be in theaters for weeks here in Chicago and Evanston.

However, if Oscars are both merit and politics-based, Winslet should win hands down anyway. She's a real box office draw, a frequent-show at premieres, set to be a four-time nominee (maybe five if she gets in for Finding Neverland), and her character in Eternal Sunshine has mood swings that scream Oscar. It's also important to note that she's accomplished all of this in her twenties. She deserves the win.

Maybe I'll decide that Imelda Staunton has given the better performance, but hell, let BAFTA award Imelda. She'll never work high-profile in Hollywood anyway or even push to work for Hollywood, so the Oscar should be given to an actress who will actually *use it* to continue building her credibility. That actress is the charming and dynamic Kate Winslet.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

As much as I love watching Julianne Moore on screen, I don't think she's done anything yet that has deserved an award. I thought she was miraculous in THE HOURS, but she gave the same exact performance in FAR FROM HEAVEN - she played a very different character the very same way, and she started to irritate me with her whispering "this is how housewives in the '50's speak" voice. If Winslet wins, I will be ecstatic.

I believe that Moore disappears into each role beautifully, almost as if it's a different actress. IMHO, she is one of the best living screen actresses.

As for her not deserving any Oscars... the following performances should have merited her the Golden Dude:

Boogie Nights
Safe
Far From Heaven
Magnolia

Julianne Moore and Kate Winslet are my favorites. I thought of adding Renee Zellweger to those ranks after CHICAGO but then there was Down with Love...

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

And I just had a terrible thought that Kate may be the next Julianne Moore - double nominated at the Oscars and still losing in both categories!

Oh, Kate...she really is marvelous.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

I terribly disagree that Julianne played both characters from The Hours and Far From Heaven the same. I think you should rewatch both those films!

And don't forget The End of the Affair. That was a year when people said she gave 5 worthy Oscar performances.

Cate Blanchett IS getting buzz. It's just that Madsen has the edge so far.

The buzz on Best Actress (currently) is that it's a 3 way race between Stauton, Swank, and Bening. I love Kate, too, but I don't think it will happen this year.

Imelda Staunton will win. Hands down.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

You people are so lucky to have like so many films. I saw about 30 films this year, and can't think of 10 that I liked. I suppose my favorite was "The Village". I love the atmosphere of that film. I also liked "The Aviator" and "Finding Neverland". Also, "The Day After Tomorrow" was mindless fun. But, for the most part, this was my least favorite year at the movies. Even Julie Andrews couldn't save "Princess Diaries 2" for me. I just hated it.

re: Popcultureboy's Top Ten Films of 2004

I'm sure you do! All at the same time, or one after the other?

A more on topic comment would be that I saw Million Dollar Baby and I loved it very much. Unlike my reaction to Bad Eduaction though, I thought to myself "let's see what can beat this". When I saw Bad Education, my thought was "nothing will beat this."
