My only hope is that in these final quiet moments, he has some self-realization of the damage he and others have done by enabling and then covering up the abuse and that he, and others leading the church, remember that they are there to serve their congregation and community.
For a man of faith, I doubt there can be any punishment worse than knowing you enabled sin and did nothing to protect the victims or stop it.

Addison, one can only hope.
But, I do wonder if the ambition to lead a church and the political skills necessary to ascend up the hierarchy are mutually exclusive to deep faith and self reflection necessary to really be a man of faith (at least in my opinion). I know others may have a different view.

The Vatican’s spokesperson, Rev. Federico Lombardi, said reporters should not expect anyone from the Vatican to confirm or deny the allegations.
“We’re not going to run after all the speculation, the fantasies or the opinions that will be expressed on this issue,” he added. “And don’t expect the three cardinals to give you interviews, either, because they have agreed not to answer (questions) or give information on this issue.”
