I'm posting the link to the story but I do not agree the two actually got into it like the title suggests.I did not see the entire segment but felt Portia answered the question Elizabeth asked very well.As much as I disagree with Elizabeth,I have not heard her say anything really bad about gays or even gay marriage.
Elisabeth Hasselbeck made a curious analogy Friday on 'The View.' She asked Portia de Rossi, who is married to Ellen Degeneres, whether marriage equality is just a semantic distinction as outrageous as women wanting to be called men.
"Take men and women. Women want all the rights of men, but they're not asking to be called men," Elisabeth said. "Do you think...is the word [marriage] more important than the rights?"
"No, of course the word isn't more important than the rights," Portia responded. "Without the word, we don't have equal rights."
Portia continued to eloquently dismantle Elisabeth's reasoning.
"Every citizen of this country should have that legal right to be married," she said. "Marriage the word actually does mean something because people who see a gay coupling as a lesser thing in society can continue to [think] it's lesser than marriage when really it's the exact same thing. The exact same love, the exact same commitment, love of family."
Portia and Ellen were married in California in August 2008, before Prop 8 reversed the legality of same-sex marriage. They did their first interview as a married couple on Oprah last month.

It was a good interview. Portia looked lovely.

How is Elisabitch's example supporting her point? Surely following her logic it would be "Gay's want all the rights of straight people, but they're not asking to be called straight,"
Honestly, I'm starting to think that woman is a little dim...

A little dim? She's a moron!
Analogy fail, Lizzie. (or is that Lissie?)
The more apt analogy would be "women want equal salaries as men, but they don't care if they're called wages" -- like it would be hunky-dory for companies to make up the pay differential with a little salary padding labeled "cookin' and cleanin' bonus" that was subject to a higher tax rate but made the wages look equal on paper.

Actually, I think it's Bessie. I remember her referring to herself as that when she wrote her family when she was on Survivor.
Ohh, that's right. What did they call the old guy she was always hanging around? Kentucky Chuck or something like that? I just remember it sounded like the name of a guy Walter Brennan would play in a movie.

His name was Rodger, but they called him Kentucky Joe.

Oh, I have. I remember when she actually compared gay marriage to someone wanting to marry a dog. Or their toaster. I'm pretty sure it was during the Star Jones years.
"No, of course the word isn't more important than the rights," Portia responded. "Without the word, we don't have equal rights."
I think that was a brilliant response, and sums up my feelings exactly.
Blueroses, I'm glad you told me. As much as I disagree with her I had not heard of her saying anything anti gay. Thanks!
I do know Sheri is no fan of the gays though, and she plays Tracey Morgans wife.

I think Sherri and Elisabeth's stances are fairly similiar and both are of little nuance. God say gay bad so gay bad.
I watched it and I thought Elisabeth was easy on Portia considering how many times she doesn't hold back what she really wants to say. I thought Elisabeth would be more hard on her actually so I was thrilled that she didn't turn it into a debate. Portia handled the interview so well. My only complaint...not enough Better Off Ted discussion. I LOVE that show!

Some cardinal just went off on gays and transsexuals in the NY Times today. BUT! Some wonderful poster commented with this:
"To all of you who do believe that Leviticus is the only and final word on "God's view on homosexuality" ...
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from you on this forum, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:
When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding all of us that God's word is eternal and unchanging."
I was glad that Sherri shifted the interview from gay marriage to Portia's show.

For some reason I can't hate Sherri. I think she's ignorant and churchy but...dare I say...kind of harmless? I think she has a good heart, I think there is hope for her and I think she means well. Elisabeth is a vicious little bitch. She's willfully ignorant. No wonder she worships Sarah Palin.
romantico...yes, I remember watching Elisabeth's toaster comment and I hated her from that moment. To dehumanize people like that and compare them to inanimate objects? I don't know. There's a real meanness there that I just don't see in Sherri.
I like to think that Elisabeth has softened a bit...and I thought she may have when Rosie was on the show, when she'd comment that when she spent time at their (Rosie and Kelli's) home, they acted just like a married couple, etc. I think it's more likely that Elisabeth knows she'd get tremendous flak for saying such a thing today, so she's on the whole "the states must decide!" train.

Found these and though it was interesting.Disagree with Sherri and Elizabeth but I never once detect any meanness just ignorance.

Excusing anti-gay prejudice by calling the bigoted ignorant but harmless does not hold much weight with me. These two women are on national TV, a national forum. Can't they educate themselves about major issues that repeatedly come up on their shows? No, they are not ignorant. They are callous and biased, they believe they are better because they are straight, they choose to have those opinions, and they express them in their national forum. That bias is what is leading freightened, nonthinkers in places like Maine and California to overturn civil rights. They are far from harmless.

Was it Milton the Toaster, because many an early-morning I might've married somebody for a hot cinnamon frosted or strawberry frosted Pop Tart.
Leia- I read this thread yesterday, then found this website while on stumbleupon. I guess the person just copied it, but nevertheless it's rather profound.

romantico, I LOVE that clip! "The West Wing" is one of my favorite TV shows. Also, Elisabeth Hasselback is a raging b*tch.
