And it's also been great to see this week's further steps towards a permanent peace in Ireland: two strong female heads of state making diplomacy where decades of violence have failed.

President McAleese is clearly someone who doesn't want Ireland to be held back by it's past and someone who wants to dispel national stereoptypes.

Ireland look set to elect their first gay President later this year, if polls are anything to go by. The first gay Head of State?

Yes Jay, it does look like we may have Senator Norris in the hot seat this time next year, though I don't think we'd be the first. I'm pretty sure Iceland had a lesbian PM before. Our President is a ceremonial role, not a decision-making position, but it would still be nice.

As for the video, a bit of background, it was made by a group in Dublin which run a number of great groups for people aged 14-25 and they have a café where people can just drop in and be themselves. They also organize the Gay Prom, which is a ball for all LGBT people who felt they could not go to the one at their school and be themselves. They're a really great group.

The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.
