Serious (possible) answer. When I'm in a hospital, I always remove my rings if I'm going to be in close contact with a patient. No amount of washing your hands can remove the bacteria under/on the ring.

I don't think too much should be read into it. Maybe he takes it off at night. They did go to the hospital early in the morning right? Some guys just don't wear rings. It's not like the whole world doesn't know he's married and he's trying to hide it.

If he was in the delivery room, often rings and other metal objects need to be removed to lessen the chance of electric or static conductivity (oxygen tanks and things like that, you know).
