Unfortunately, if you frequent many of these celebrations

you will discover that it's NOT just the Puerto Rican parade that is like this. There are always wackos and fringe element people that come out for these types of events.

Don't be so quick to judge the entire population of that ethnic group by that one experience. I've been to St Patrick Day parades that would curl your hair

Wow, I am not gonna be loved for this post. I was annoying and used all caps...hey, atleast I will not stand out with the annoying part!

It's not clear what annoyed you...the ethnic slurs or the people taking issue with them...

Oh my god you people. No one is insulting any ethnic group. Just the parade itself! And you are all a bunch of bitchy hussys anyway!

Alright -- this post was not intended to be racist.

I'm Puerto Rican and I took no offense to it at all...

"There were over 100,000 of them out and about and let me just say, for a day to celebrate bieng proud of a culture, they displayed themselves to be rude, vulgar and trashy. I have never seen so many half naked overweight women in my life."

Might not have been meant as a slur, but one can certainly read it that way. Always a danger with flat print...

Yes, last year when I was on my way into the Tonys I passed by the people who were hanging around after the parade and man, that really was a disaster.

I honestly don't care what race you are, but act in a way that gets respect. Especially on a day when you're supposed to be representing your heritage and expressing how good it is, don't go around looking or acting like trash. No one's going to like that, no matter what race you are.

I have a Puerto Rican friend who said to me the day of the parade "There are Puerto Ricans and then there's the people you see at the parade."
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

Etoile;
Darling. You surely don't intent to mess with me. Do you?

No one has "anointed me arbiter of this board." If you read the posters other threads and follow ups you will see that the character of this poster doesn't indicate any mean spiritness or racism. The poor girl had a hard day at work. The Puerto Rican day parade was not a fun thing to deal with for her. That is all she was trying to say.

The Dame will be in NY in August. I look forward to walking up to you and whispering sweet hussys into your ear. Unfortunately, if you frequent many of these celebrations

Say what?

Are you asking if I "intended" to mess with you? If you think the gauntlet has been thrown, then you can feel free to pick it up and run with it. Honey, I've faced down masters at imtimidation. There's nothing on this God's green earth I fear, and certainly not some self proclaimed "hussy" on a message board.

And another correction, I'm not a bitchy hussy. I'm just a freaking bitch tired of all the other crap that has been going on here over the past month. And yes, you are one of the ringleaders. You obviously don't know or are familiar with past post from people such as newyorkuniq or even Mr Roxy. What do you know of slurs? Should I be expecting a Mrs Etoile or a Funny Thing Happened from you or Zola?

Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

Say what?

The intent of the thread may not have been racist. In fact, I believe it was more an expression of frustration over a parade where people got out of control and it could very well have applied to any group. This just happened to be the Puerto Rican parade. However, as I mentioned in my previous post, it opens the door for people who do want to express ethnic slurs (they may not even be aware that this is what they are expressing) and there are too many people lately that go around making these slurs and jokes then say "everyone's a little bit racist."

I think a few of were just trying to stop it before it got started. I am also half Latino and although I was not insulted by what Newyorkunique said, I saw the potential for inappropraite responses to her comments. Sometimes people say things that they don't even realize could be insulting or considered a slur. Unfortunately, the attempt to head something off only created a mess that is just as bad. So, why don't we just let this thread die out.

Say what?

bravo, etoile! of late many "newcomers" seem very mean-spirited and, quite frankly, extremely ignorant and immature. while some "oldcomers" certainly had that reputation, things seemed to have quieted down on that negative front and truces made.

stick to the topics. lose the nasty posts. if you disagree, fine, just lose what you think passes as humor.

Yeah ummmm guess some people read into things what they want to. I mean it's not like I said ALL PUERTO RICANS ARE HUSSYS!!!!!

lolol
lighten up people!!
#40

Say what?

Uniq, that's the problem: no one wants to lighten up.
I guess it would be racist if I started talking about all the specifics I noticed from certain ethnic groups (or people from certain countries) when I was a waiter near Times Square a few years ago. It's not hard to see a pattern developed.
And, for god's sake, I'm Irish and there's one group that has its fair share of slurs constantly. Roll with it. If I thought for a second someone was actually being ugly, I might get serious, too.
It's a board. Have fun.
Oh, and NYUniq (and the rest of you who wear little chips on your shoulders just waiting for them to be knocked off): I was walking my dog on 9th ave well after the parade. Once a parade is over, you can generally expect the crowds to disperse all over the city and this was no exception. While I was standing on the corner, a group of 5 PRicans came by and spent a few minutes with my dog. They were extremely nice and we chatted the entire time, then they went on their way.
So, yeah, the parade/crowd mentality gets people off their gourd but not everyone can be expected to behave that way.

Say what?

I have a problem with parades in general. I purposely avoid the Gay Pride parade (yes I'm Gay) because in recent years it has become nothing more than an excuse to get drunk/high/stoned (or any combination of the above) and pick up tricks. (not to mention make a public ass of yourself) It's not fun, its not particularly interesting, and it gives me no sense of pride whatsoever in my "culture". That being said, parades in general just bore me to death. Maybe because my father used to make us go to any and every parade and stand for hours watching the stupid cheap floats and listening to the off-key marching bands trod by...yuck.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Say what?

Redhot, I think you hit on the real reason to ban all parades.
I watched the Thanksgiving Day Parade every morning growing up, couldn't wait to move to NYC, finally trodded out one morning to catch it...and wondered what the fuss was about. It was kind of like Anytown, USA's little Christmas parade with a few random celebs (God forbid that I ever have to see Justin Guarini in person again) and some Broadway floats piping in their songs.
#43

Say what?

I went to the Macy's Day Parade (teeHEE, redhot!!!) the first year i was in NYC and loved it! but never again...
#44

Say what?

That's the answer. Let's just ban all parades. They really are boring and when they are attached to anything "pride" they do become a reason to get drunk and stupid.

I live in a town that is located on a peninsular North of Boston. There are only two streets that lead out of town. One of them leads into the neighboring city of East Boston which, every two years holds a Columbus Day parade and blocks one of those exits from my town. So much fuss and annoyance to watch a bunch of old men (The Knights of Columbus) following another old man dressed in a moth eaten Columbus costume on a float and preceded by a local high scholl band playing off key patriotic American and Italian songs. Why?

Oh dear God Orion... that is a sad picture you just painted.
Hamlet's father.
#46

Say what?

Yeah but, at least this pathetic parade doesn't happen every year, at least not near my neighborhood. It alternates years with the North End of Boston.
I forgot about it once about two years ago and will never make that mistake again. I was trying to get to Boston for a Sunday matinee. It was such a nightmare. So, lets ban all parades in major cities.

Oh Etoile,

Now you are just trying to create a argument for no reason. It comes of phony and put upon. I guess you don't posess the real nastiness of a Mr Roxy. Just the put upon bitchiness.

Oh sure, Every parade brings out a few bad apples. And by and large, the NYC Gay Pride parade is pretty homoginized - after the fifteenth bar float with gyrating go go boys atop it passes - I somehow feel "Gee, is THAT all Gay Pride is today?".

But then I see the marcxhing groups of gay cops and firemen and Gay religious groups, the gay student groups, and my heart swells with pride after all!

Orion, are you in Winthrop? My mom is from Winthrop. My relatives still live in Winthtop. I summered in Winthrop.
I used to watch parades from my grandmothers front porch on Winthrop Street.
