Puerto Ricans Take Over NYC

Oh my!!! I just survived 8 hours working in Times Square during the "Puerto Rican Day" Parade etc. There were over 100,000 of them out and about and let me just say, for a day to celebrate bieng proud of a culture, they displayed themselves to be rude, vulgar and trashy. I have never seen so many half naked overweight women in my life. And of course I was dressed as Marilyn so all day I got shouts of "who the f*c*k are you supossed to be b*t*h". Of course they were doing lots of worse things that I can't even mention on this message board. Anyway I Can't wait till that's all over...oy

I would make sure I knew that it wasn't a group of people of a certain ethnicity that behaved that way, but the type of people who come out for those kinds of events regardless of ethnicity, etc.

Ugh....I stayed up in my neighborhood....UWS. I can't stand this parade. The city is left in such a mess, and there is just this annoying attitude, almomst hostility towards other people. I don't have anything against Puerto Rican people, but for some reason, this parade brings out the worst. I think a lot of new yorkers leave this weekend. It's just not fun.

NYU....off-topic on the off-topic board, but on Friday, I was in the city....walked by Planet Hollywood to say "Hi!", knowing you worked there from your post, but only the Elvis guy was around. So, I'll just say "Hi" here.

re: Puerto Ricans Take Over NYC

Hahaha awwwe yes, so many of the people who come out for the Puerto Rican Day parade (as well as the Labor Day Parade in Brooklyn) are so trashy and scantily dressed. There are plenty of tasteful people there, but for every tasteful person, there are at least 10 tasteless people.

This Puerto Rican stayed her ass home this year re: Puerto Ricans Take Over NYC

Last year, the Puerto Rican Day parade was the same day as the Tonys. THAT was a freaking mess.

I thought this was about a sequel to West Side Story where the Puerto Ricans win...

Um, I'm sure if I had been around for the parade I'd be irritated too, but isn't this post a little racist?

wicked_UNpopular - hahaha - my my aren't you the clever one! No really, you should write for Letterman or something. Adding un to the word popular as to show that you didn't like me or something. I'm rolling in the aisles. You certainly are witty aren't you?

And actually some of us aren't the least bit racist today. We realize that some cultures celebrate differanly than others. I'm sorry if you were annoyed today, but I just think this could be considered offensive to some. Maybe what you consider to be trashy or overweight is different from their opinions. I'm sorry if you felt harrassed, but is insulting puerto ricans as a whole really any better?

re: Puerto Ricans Take Over NYC

Wow thanks for enjoying my clever wittyness so very much. As for celebrating a culture, my point is that what they were doing today would be considered offensive to everyone. I dunno...how do you feel about girls walking around in nothing but a thong and pasties and men wearing PR flags screaming that they want to eat p**sy? Or is that what you refer to as "celebrating differently"?

re: Puerto Ricans Take Over NYC

I believe that there was nothing racist in the intent of this thread but, infortunately, when you start a thread like this it opens the door for some very racist remarks disguised as humor form others.

The problem is not Puerto Ricans celebrating, it's any group of people that large celebrating any culture. The St Patricks Day Parade in Boston has created the same kind of problems. The Gay Pride Parades are often full of gay men and lesbians screaming things out that some would find offensive and we won't even talk about some of the costumes.

Any large group of any ethnicity has the potential to get carried away. It's like a mob mentality.

By the way, I don't think the meaning of the Ave Q song is that it's ok to spew racial slurs as long as you're smiling and quoting puppets.

re: Puerto Ricans Take Over NYC

This is not a racist thread at all. It is just factual. I have unfortunately been around NYC for a few Puerto Rican day parades. 90% of the people that attend are rude, vulgar, drunk or on something else. The traffic jams it causes are unbelievable. And the trash left behind is so disgusting. I was borned and raised in Puerto Rico. And I will say the whole affair is a embarrasment. The city should cancel this event purely because of its destructiveness. This parade has nothing to do with pride. Nothing.

I also want to add that the gay and lesbian parades and the St Patricks day parade are like days at Disney in comparison.

Maybe in comparison they are milder but they do have tehir elements of bad behavior. My point was simply that you can't criticize an entire ethnicity for the actions of some. Every large group celebration of pride or heritage is going to include those who do not know how to show pride without acting like jerks.

re: Puerto Ricans Take Over NYC

One year I sat in the audience of "Frankie and Johnny" and I thought the loud heavy bass was the background noise caused by Frankie's Hell's Kitchen neighbors. I thought it was pretty overdone because I had trouble hearing the actor's voices.
I was walking out of the theater and I mentioned the noise to my sister and she informed me it was the Dominican Day Parade.
Gawd I wish they did away with all parades. I don't know how Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci were able to concentrate
